Huh. You're proposing that people who want to read/post on LUGnet but not
via e-mail would be set up as able to post, but not actually be on the
distribution list? That'd be a Very Interesting list configuration. I'm
fairly sure it'd work though.

That's the way it works, yes.  Say there is some discussion group (newsgroup)
called lugnet.foo.  Then all messages arriving into lugnet.foo are echoed out
to an e-mail distribution list (person-by-person, group-by-group voluntary
subscriptions).  And then all messages e-mailed to lugnet.foo@lugnet.com
automagically show up in the group lugnet.foo.

So for practical purposes, in many ways it behaves as a mailing list -- you
send to it, and you get a copy of your message back in a few minutes.  And you
get copies of messages other people send.  But it's not really a mailing list
-- because it's really a newsgroup gateway.  'Followup-To' and 'Reply-To'
become isomorphic, as do 'Newsgroups' and 'To'.  So if you address something
thusly:

   To: lugnet.cad.dat@lugnet.com,lugnet.build@lugnet.com
   Reply-To: lugnet.cad@lugnet.com

then the effect is just as if you had posted thusly to the NNTP server:

   Newsgroups: lugnet.cad.dat,lugnet.build
   Followup-To: lugnet.cad

Additionally, 'References' headers are preserved, and 'In-Reply-To' is mapped
into 'References' if 'References' is undefined in the incoming mail.

server here were allowed to send out messages to a given mailing list. And
sending out copies of people's posts without their permission fits well
within the Terms of Use, which allow LUGNET to republish submitted content
in any medium.  (So in effect, they have already given their permission to
do so.)

The mailing list users probably haven't explicitly given such permission. At
least I don't think so -- I didn't actually read the fine print. :)

On the way home from the grocery I just figured out how to make this all work
with no hitches.  More details later; I need to change the way outgoing mail is
sent first.

(...) Majordomo can be set up this way. By definition, any decent list server must be as good as Majordomo. Huh.
