As one who is contributing to this non-LEGO noise at the present I don't
really mind where .off-topic resides, as long as I can still get to it (I
tend to read from the web interface). It's probably not a bad idea for the
more recognisably controversial groups to be shifted to prevent deterring
newcomers.

"Recognisably controversial" -- that's an interesting (and helpful) choice
of words.  By that metric, I think there are actually 3 areas which could
end up deterring newcomers:

   1) .off-topic.*
   2) .admin.*
   3) .market.auction

(Not 100% sure about the third one, but it *is* controversial, and I've heard
quite a bit of anti-auction (especially anti-eBay announcements) talk lately.
I'd hate to exclude the entire .market.* tree from the homepage, though,
because of things like .shopping (for example) which probably appeal to
most people.  Hmm, I wonder about the .market.jambalaya group...)

:-)

Excluding those groups from the front page (I mean first page of
www.lugnet.com) would be a nice thing (providing that they would still
be accessible from the links at the light blue field, as it is now) and
I can't imagine a thing that could be effected badly from this change.

For the jambalaya posts, I think most probably there is nothing
interesting in a jambalaya message for the others so it would be nice to
exclude them, too. Actually, I remember that I was annoyed when I saw
them in .general several times (I can withstand being annoyed rather
well, by the way).

(...) hmmm... but then, it'll be harder for the theoretical user who wants to track these groups from the web interface to know if there's something new/recent in them. Perhaps (until a fully customizable front page is designed) _all_ the groups (...) (25 years ago, 9-Mar-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
