Yes, this will be for ALL people posting to lugnet.* newsgorups -- whether
they use an external newsreader or the web interface.
It's not necessary for everyone to have their info stored in a web browser
cookie -- that's totally optional and only useful if someone is posting from
the web interface -- the only thing that will be necessary is for all new
users to go to the /news/post/setup/ page and "register" their info with
the server, so that the server can have it on hand when passing messages (or
turning them away), and when adding the X-Real-Life-Name header.
So the overall impact on the system as a whole is simply:
1. It takes a bit of extra time for a new user to "sign up" to use this
service -- the time for them to read and fill out the form -- and the
time delay while they wait to receive e-mail confirmation that the
server has their info.
2. 'From:' header lines are regulated by the system (starting tomorrow)
so that messages from people the server doesn't yet recognize will be
politely refused.
So today is just "get-ready-for-tomorrow-day." Tomorrow, the database of
known names (collected today) will go active.
The current database of X-Real-Life-Name mappings, BTW, is going into the
ol' bit bucket in the sky -- it was built by me by hand, and is much better
off being built in a more automated way by the system, from actual data that
people have sworn (via a checkbox) to be correct. They also have to check a
checkbox explicitly stating that they understand that their real-life name
will appear in all messages they post.
This all should have been implemented just like this 2 weeks ago, but I was
too shortsighted.

I'm mainly interested for curiosity reasons - I'd like to know how slrn will report to me that a post (...) (26 years ago, 19-Oct-98, to lugnet.admin.general)
