Re: Why these news groups were created

(...) Well, the first line is "where minds connect". I agree with that assessment. Now, I'm not really sure what being "home to thousands of LEGO fans of all ages" means. Certainly many people come to LUGNET to connect, but is it really a "home"? (...) (20 years ago, 23-Sep-04, to lugnet.admin.nntp, FTX)

Important message for people connecting via NNTP

Due to a recent distributed denial of service attack, we have shut down NNTP service on port 119 to prevent further service interruptions. Alternate ports 1119, 8000, and 8080 are still available. --Todd (21 years ago, 26-Sep-03, to lugnet.admin.nntp, lugnet.announce) !!

Re: Why these news groups were created

(...) LUGNET is a free, mostly self-regulating community of FOL's, primarily of the A- variety, but with a few T- and K- types thrown in as well. Putting stricter systems in place to restrict and censor the tone of conversation in so-called (...) (20 years ago, 24-Sep-04, to lugnet.admin.suggestions, FTX)

Re: Why these news groups were created

(...) The ages I've seen posted by LUGNET users generally range in the 18+ range, but a few have posted ages in the 13-18 group, and a few others have posted in the under-13 group (I can think of at least one person from each of the non-adult age (...)   distributed denial of service attack

I believe the recent "distributed denial of service attack" was SWEN. I was getting copies of that from all over the world to my lugnews address, and only to my lugnews address, until you moved ports. That shut off the incoming viri like a switch. I (...) (...) So THAT's what was going on! I got over 2200 .swen virus emails in the 10 days or so preceding the closing of that port, and then, as you mentioned, they stopped like a switch had been flipped. Thanks so much for fixing that, Todd! Adrian (21 years ago, 2-Oct-03, to lugnet.admin.nntp)

  Re: NNTP is working (mostly)

(...) Actually, the site wasn't down -- only the dynamic portions of the webserver were shut off (voluntarily and automatically by the system) to help keep the load average down. The NNTP attacks are still coming and the total number of compromised (...) (21 years ago, 23-Sep-03, to lugnet.admin.general, lugnet.admin.nntp)

(...) Did you move to port 1119? You didn't say if you had, but if you haven't, you might try that. Did you try repeatedly and check that the web access was working at the time that you got the failure? My experience has been that service is still (...) Hi all, I've been itching to tell you all this for some time now... Frank Filz and myself are now able to add and remove curatorships to groups. Hello! (...) The issue is not the F-word itself in my as always more than humble opinion.
