Greetings! I hope that the New Year finds you all well!
Several people have asked whether the engine shed and crane car models shown
on page 53 of the January Shop At Home catalog are going to be for sale in
the future.
These models are meant only as inspirational display models. They will not
be product SKUs in the future. However, we are working now to create an
instructional article on http://www.LEGO.com/trains to showcase some of the
details of the Engine Shed, in order to help you build your very own
version! Stay tuned for details on the timing of this article.

One question I had was: what is a good source of the 1x4x2 grey
lattice/fence? That seems about the only rare part in the engine shed...

Jake,
I really enjoyed the train yard shot in the latest Shop at Home catalog. For
some reason, it reminded me of the photos on the cover and inside the 1980
European Lego Train catalog.

This is the catalog that made me fall in love with Lego trains to begin
with. It is great to see the train line expanding the way it is.
One suggestion - how about a track workers figure pack? That could make up
for not shipping mini-figures with the new engines and rolling stock.

Equally important is a source for the black low slope corner elements used
in the roof of the small control tower building behind the shed.
Having these instruction ideas online will be sort of a like an online 9V
successor to the 7777 Idea Book. Please don't stop at the shed, do lots of
ideas!

Hogwart's Express has a pair of them. I'm not sure if that qualifies as a
good source, but it's a source. :) It's the only recent source I've run
across, but I don't buy the whole product range by any means...

I was happy to see the reintroduction of the Assorted Roof Tiles (5216) at
$4.99 in the new catalog. My next order will include at least 6 of these
packs. I will purchase at least 15 bulk element packs to get the extra 15%
discount that makes 5216 cost $4.24 for 57 slopes or about 7.5 cents apiece
plus shipping. I requested last year on Dear Lego a better variety of roof
tiles. I just hope we see an assorted low slope tile bulk element pack this
year and other colors in the assorted pack.

More thoughts on a train mini-figure pack -
- I could see the track workers set being comprised of an engineer, a ticket
checker and four construction worker types.
- For more play value, include a hand car or other mini-maintenance vehicle
that can ride the rails.
- I've always liked the blue and gray colors that many other AFOLs use for
"classic style" train personnel instead of the more modern mini-figures
included in the 4561 train. (The google-eyed mini-fig head - ugh!)
- Include caps, beards, handkerchiefs, keys and train specific tools for our
dutiful workers. For example, the classic signal paddle on the cover of
http://www.brickshelf.com/scans/catalogs/1980/c80eutr/c80eutr-01.html .
- And you need contruction hats in black and yellow when you are out in the
yard. (My hard hat crew has plenty of red).

I don't think it is necessarily a "re-introduction" of 5216, to the best of
my knowledge they have never been unavailable. They haven't appeared in a
catalog in a while but I have been buying them on and off (usually one or
two packs tacked on an order) for the last six months or so. It is nice to
see them advertised again as I take it to mean they have a decent stock of
them.

Yes! that would be great.... and if you do this please don't make them
ultramodern. Make their cloting a bit more generic so it fits with almost
any era.. No silver shades or safety stripes.

What would be really neat would be a working party like some from FR or TR in
Wales in the 50's. School Jackets and all...
I'd like to see some older looking (historic) minifig sets. The stuff that was
faked up for the April Fools joke would be really nice to see done up as actual
sets...and would, IMO, be nice to have things. First though, we need a 3 axle
train motor...and larger train wheels.

Hogwart's Express is a better source than Hagrid's Hut - it has one.

Sorry, what's "FR or TR"??? If *I* don't know what it is, it may not have
much draw to US train fans as none of them will know either. May do well
with the subset of UK train fans who know Wales, though.

Sorry, Ffestiniog and Tal-y-lyn railways. (I just didn't want to have to look
up the proper welsh spellings...I guess I was expecting too much by using the
common initials, like if I had used ATSF or BN or SP or suchlike :)

So would I. But, the more we ask, the more likely they are to listen...look at
the Cypress Tree pack as a example.
If we don't ask, they are far less likely to make them. I'd like to see a
modified setup that allowes the use of the older connecting rod set, and
cylinders, based on a slightly modified 9V motor. Even if it was only 4 wheel,
that would at least help hide the lack of wheels. Lets face it, as it is now,
there are a very limited number of steam prototypes that even the right number
of wheels level of accuracy is possible. (Try modeling a 2-6-0, or 2-8-2 right
now...)

I Agree. I would really like to see Conductor Charlie and Engineer Max minifigs.
And how about some passenger minifigs with back packs and lugguage, and
please don't forget some female minifigs - very important.
While I'm at it, how about a historic looking train station (packed with
minifigs) :-)

Bert, this is generally true of _ALL_ items listed in the Shop@Home Catalogs.
The January catalog is historically brief and a lot of items are not pictured
but they are still available.
In the way of a shopping tip:
When planning your next S@H catalog order, line up the last 4 or 5 catalogs
and use all of them as a guide of what items are available. Then, write up a
list of the items you want starting with the oldest items first. These are
the ones that might be sold out but you want them if you can get them. Put
the
newest items on the _bottom_ of the list as these items will be available in
the future and you can pass on them for now.
Also, if you want older stuff be sure to place your order via telephone during
daylight business hours as items with few in stock are likely not always
listed online.
When you call to order, read off your list in order of oldest to
newest. If you are lucky and the older items you want are available then you
might not even get to the bottom of your list before you tell the phone
operator that you are done ordering. Ask for subtotals during the order
process so you know how much you are spending and do not forget to ask for
your order confirmation number. The order number will allow you to call back
and adjust your order if you need to.
If you have picked out some really old stuff it is likely you will hear "Item
no longer available." Cross it off the list and keep going. When I order I
always start with the old stuff first and many times I have been able to get
Lego sets that are up to 4 years old or that have been previously unavailable.
I start with a list that is so long that I might hear "Item not Available" a
dozen or more times until I get lucky on something that is actually still in
stock. I wonder if the telephone operators hate buyers like me ? :)
Just because an item is not pictured in the latest catalog, DO NOT assume that
it is no longer available.

My favorite minfig torso has always been the blue-collar worker guy with 2
breast pockets --> http://www.brickbay.com/P/7/973p26.gif
Including this minifig in Green, Red, Black, Dark Gray, etc. would result in
me
buying many, many minifig packs.
Minifig construction Hard Hats in various colors would also be excellent.
As Lar put it--more generic is better. No train logos or fancy torso
patterns.

If it helps: I ask, I even beg for big train wheels! (Smaller than 396 ones,
bigger than 7750 ones.) And please add a hole for connecting rods and please
make them in red and black.... To syncronise them (left + right side) please
make them fitting for use of a technik axle.
For an easy start make up a quarter piece of straight track and 9V wheel sets
in dark grey and red.
For the minifig pack I wish to see an orange constructors helmet.

I spent some time with the track workers when my company was developing some
automation equipment for a railroad. Track workers wear ordinary clothes like
construction workers. What you need is construction hats in yellow.

Has anyone found the instructions to this engine shed on the lego site? I
got tired of waiting and have been building an LDraw model of it. I've got
the outer structure done using only bulk pieces that lego currenlty sells.
Current cost is $110.00 minus roof and inside stuff. Does anyone have any
more images of what the inside looks like?
