Castles don't get wooshed,

What??  You mean I've been doing the wrong thing for the past fifteen years?!?!
;)

Unfortunately, I also have a huge pile of white 1x2x5 columns, and I've
still got no idea how to build something structurally sound out of those...

These parts are really only structurally sound when used as pillars.  They work
well supporting walkways in castle walls.  :)

So then I get to my next questions:
1) Many of my white bricks are decendents from the days when I was a kid.
Many of my white bricks are scuffed and scratched and turning brown from
being scuffed on concrete floors or other random childhood damage. Can one
polish ABS?

Brasso will remove dirt, scuffs, and scrapes with a bit of buffing, but it does
not remove yellowing due to age, unfortunately.  :(

2) Are there any currently available sets that have:
1) white castle walls or corner walls?

Not as far as I know...

2) a green 1x3 plate?

Yup, but I can't don't know which.  I have about ten, I think.

3) white castle 'turret tops'? (like the ubiquitous grey ones;
half a 10-spot-diameter octagon with crenelations)?

I think Cannon Cove is the only set to ever have a white one...
They're eight studs wide, btw.  ;)

4) straight staircases?

Which kind, the "Fabuland" ones?  again, I don't beleive so, but check recent
Belville (pre-fairy tale) sets, there might be some there.  I can't guarentee
you'll find a color you want, though...

5) Clear bricks, 1x2 preferrably?

These have appeared in a number of Freestyle Tubs and Buckets, I believe.

???  I often throw them into the middle of walls, and they seem to work fine.
I try to make sure they are well braced from the top and the bottom, and not
line too many of them up, but I have had little problem with them as a
structral element.  I used some of them here:

http://www.people.thirteen.net/~eric/lego/panetteria.html

As well as in the larger (half destroyed) "cathedral" I built.  Pics of it can
be seen on the NELUG Webpage (www.nelug.org) under the BrikWars links.  It
looks rickety, but that's just a clever ruse.  It's quite solid.

I find that when one goes with a design like that, it looks a lot better,
much, much better. But some fool (usually me) is going to make lots of
little pieces at some point.

A design like that yields effectively large sections:

   ------  ------  ------
  |      ||      ||      |
  |      ||      ||      |
  |      ||      ||      |
  |      ||      ||      |
   ------  ------  ------

Where the only places the sections can be locked together are on the
tops and bottoms.

I really like the looks of it, and it yields a quite modular design,
but I can't make it stay together.

Which brings me to yet another question:

What's the trick to relatively durable buildings built in that style?

(sorry, lotsa meta-castle design questions, little in the way of
photographs. I'll try to fix that soon...)

I've found the best way is layers of bricks or plates on top and bottom
strengthen it enough.  This is one of the reasons I don't really use it; it
gobbles up plates, and bricks make it too tall...  :)  (I had forgotten about
this use of those bricks in my original post, sorry.)

There are; but they're not currently in production. Like in <set:6265 this
set>. But I doubt you could get them cheaply...

Nu-uh. BV had only spiral staircases, IIRC. OTOH, there are at least two types
of straight staircases; one came with Fort Legoredo, and it doesn't have the
rising (I think that's the right term) or a rail. There's also another type, I
think it appeared in space sets, but I'm not sure which. Both of these
appeared in black, I think, which is a not-bad-at-all color for castles...

These have appeared in a number of Freestyle Tubs and Buckets, I believe.

And perhaps town sets as well.

Yup, I know, but he asked if any were in current production.  Other sets
include 725, 4020, 6276, 6277, and undoubtedly a few more...

Yes, they did, I have some.  :)  I just thought there where more than there
actually are.  ;)  (see below)

A cream one appears in <set:5808>.

These stairs appeared in Castle, Pirate, Belville, and Fabuland as well.
Magenta in <set:5870>, Dark Gray in <set:6270> and <set:6273>, Black in
<set:6082> and <set:6988>, Yellow in <set:3676>, <set:3681>, and <set:3682>.

Not recently.  Only Freestyle has had them recently, AFAIK.

I also have built castles with the "lift off" design.  I prefer them to ones
that hinge (although some of the hinged creations I have seen are very
impressive - i.e. Ed Boxer's AMAZING white castle).

What I have done is to not have the sections lock together with studs at
all.  Instead I have the upper section rest on a row of tiles and place
corresponding bricks on the underside of the upper section which slide down
immediately to the inside of the lower section walls.  This, in effect,
"locks" the upper section in place.  Unless you tip the castle to 90
degrees, this will provide a sturdy construction.

Yeah, this is the problem. I'd never been much into pirate, see, and now
I note all those pirate sets that had a whole bunch of parts that'd be
useful today...

deprecated piece.

Tell me about it... I am just now beginning to re-appreciate them (as a kid I
really wanted them, but...). Once I get some better funds, I'll consider
shelling some dough on a pirate set or two (or ten).

Actually, I'd love it if I could get my hands on it. It's better than the
spiral staircases, thasfersure.

P.S. I just noticed that those weird commas in your sig are actually Pacman!
That's hilarious!

The staircase. Fort Legoredo is the one of that genre of sets I missed, of
course. I need to go see if the TRU near home still had those... I was
hoping to wait 'til clearance. :)

So, of course, which do I have more of in my collection? :)

The spiral staircases come in handy, though-- they take up less floor space
in a tower structure.
