Hey everyone!
A fellow .castle follower in a previous post suggested that .castle is
losing members because our lack of activity. Other groups are getting
stronger because they have group projects (POD's, Moonbase, Train Layouts)
and they have lots of activity - which leads to inspiration. We here are
all bored without inspiration - and we need to get past this block and get
revved up to make for a bright future...
Now we need to do two things - find a project we can all work on (1) and get
ready for the day Hop-Frog is accepting new CW submissions.(2)
With that in mind - lets take a roll call. Who is in? Who is ready to make
the Castle theme once again rival all the others, build our .castle
community back to to rival its past glory days - and kick major .spacer butt?

My fellow .castle members, i personaly do not plan on leaving nor do i plan
on losing interest in castle themes, for a few good reasons. mainly one
actually, my entire lego set is 90% castle, i plan to stay a castle theme
person for a very long time......i'm with you Jeremy... who else is with us??

I added my name to the roll call in another post, but wanted to add a few
comments. It is true that posting has been light here in .castle during
recent weeks. I for one lurk here as often as .space, as I am among those
cross-themers who appreciate both (I do Town sometimes too). Honestly,
although I love the Moonbase idea, the current Pod craze and the tremendous
volume of Star Wars related posts in .space has got me kinda turned off.
Not that I don't encourage all that, I'm not interested personally.
But enough griping. I wanted to write about the above quoted post regarding
what Castle people might do to get the kind of excitement currently seen in
.space and elsewhere. At this time I won't go into examples or analysis of
why people are excited elsewhere. Instead, I will ask a far more basic
question:
What is it that has attracted our interest in the Castle theme in the first
place?
This is something we might benefit from understanding if we are to generate
new excitement here. Are we here because we have in interest in history?
In medieval fantasy? In medieval role-playing? Strategy gaming?
Storytelling? Architecture? etc.... What is it that inspires our interest
in this theme?
I for one become highly interested in discussion in this group when they
focus on topics of history. But I am not adverse to discussing gaming or
enjoying the pics of the latest Giant Castle of Antioch or whatever. But
that is me. What about you?
I think if we better grasp what is bringing us together here, then we can
move on to brainstorm group projects or building fads like the other groups
have.

A suggestion for a joint project. Early in my reading LUGNET days, the
castle group had a project (I think it was originally Shiri's idea) whre
everyone would build a part of a castle wall, with whatever they wanted
attached to it (Armory, Blacksmith's Shop, whatever). There were set
parameters for the wall itself and the connectors between walls. Then
everyone's wall could be joined together. Sounds a lot like the moonbase. huh?

Hiya Jeremy and other Catle-Heads,
I'd just like to add my nearly 300,000 bricks to the crushing defeat of all
other themes. Castle is in my opinion the best, most fun theme to build in.
I have been working on a large scale Castle project for a bit now, the theme
has been my favorite since the 1990s. Way cool stuff.
Let me just add however that my LEGO bug bite came in the form of Space as a
kid and the Dark Ages were ended by the fantastic Pirates theme. All themes
fall under the category LEGO and most compliment each other well or offer
interesting design features. Castle may be my Favorite, but the other
themes still get workshop time in my Kingdom.

I really dont know what all of the fuss is about. I think that in the last
couple of months I have made and posted a few decent creations (although
they are cad renderings (because I do not have my LEGO at college) - which
are not appreciated as much - this is an entirely different issue to debate).

I completely agree with Hendo. I am tired of seeing three new pod designs
on the front lugnet page every day. Pods are ok, but they dont interest me
much.

1) Finding a 6080 under my bed at 5 am on a Christmas morning
2) My parents reading to me fairy tales and classic books
3) My parents giving me large quantities of history and architecture books
4) Traveling to historic places in the United States as a kid.
5) Being able to express my creativity through constructing historic buildings.
6) Probably more reasons but I pulled an all nighter last night ;)
I plan to continue creating Castle Themed sets and instructions on my
computer and sporadically posting them. I will also try to take more time
to respond to others moc's - I know I appreciate it when others respond.
Castleheads: Remember quality can be better than quantity - I am not worried
about these space people :) (no offense space people)

Part of the factor is the parts available, but most of it come from the fact
that this theme is based on reality. If you build any quasi historic item,
it needs to look like that item. If I were to build any type of spaceship no
one can argue that it doesn't look like a spaceship.

Well then. Why don't Castlers take a cue from Spacers and build MOCs of
things they have seen in films, books, and other media. In .space I have
seen models of SW, ST, and Red Dwarf ships, etc. How many Castle MOCs have
been renditions of items from sword & sorcery or historic films? I know
I've seen some LOR things posted. What about Willow, Labyrinth, Army of
Darkness, Princess Bride, Gladiator, Highlander, Black Adder, etc.?
What if we were inspired to build models of such things? I seem to recall a
fairly ominous looking bad-guy castle in Willow... Haven't seen a MOC of
that. And Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail? Sure, there was that
video short a while back and I thought I saw a killer rabbit scene recently,
but think of what else you could make. The cave beast? The castle near the
sea? "Maybe we could build a mini-fig scale wooden badger..." <grin>

We did just do this at Brickfest ("we" in the loose sense as I was not
there). There was a walled town in the Castle room where different people
brought modules that all fit together. As it turns out, one person built
all of the actual walls and others built town buildings, but others could
have built walls, too, or guard towers or whatever. My impression was that
the Moonbase idea intially was driven by seeing other joint-build projects
(and, let's all admit it, it is the Train guys who are really the kings at
this). There is discussion over in the .town section as well on coming up
with a standard so that creations could be put together to make city blocks.

Well, there are certainly a lot of Space builders who are trying to make
their ships look like "actual" items--Star Wars ships, Star Trek, etc.
There are others who are building things completely out of their imagination.
In Castle, there are people who are really serious about building
historically accurate castles. For instance, this page:

You could also look at long debates in this newsgroup on the precise size
and shape of arrow slits, or heraldry, etc, for people with a passion for
historical accuracy.
There are also people building castle stuff based on fiction (either fantasy

Then there are people doing stuff completely out of their imagination. For

So I would say that the issues are the same. You can be inspired by
"reality" or just your imagination.

You can count me in on any castle project. Castle sort of
has that nostalgic feeling other feelings seemingly can't
deliver.
I'm guessing a lot of our "inspirations" come from such things
as Dungeons and Dragons, which I we should try to base our
creations on. Yeah, it may be tempting, but that takes most
of the fun out of it, If you're copying down character descriptions
and incorporating them into your work. I'm not saying it's
a sin to use others ideas, but I would prefer to create my
own style of creatures, and work off that. Otherwise, it's fan
fiction, and one key to success is pure originality. (although
there are exemptions)
Okay, you're probably thinking that I hate D&D. This is
not true. Sure .space does a similar approach, such as
some works as Babylon 5 and Star Wars, but most of the
works I've seen in .space are purely original, such as Adrian
Drake's blood moon, Gil Shaw's VOX, Pods, Spiffcrafts,
I can go on and on. One Idea to solve this problem, is
perhaps for .castle to work on a group project like a
novella in which each member contributes storyline
info, and the curator (or person who oversees the project)
can put it together into one epic. Either that, or
organize a castle most original creation contest. Now,
that would be tight.
I can't wait until the submission process to Castle World starts
once again. The reason I haven't myself, been thoroughly active
in castle, particularly inthe MOC threads, is my lack of access
a DigiCam. Cure that, and I'm in.

I am with you. I know I have not been doing a hole lot but that is
because I can not show any of my creatins, (because I do not have a digital
camera, Yet) also becase I am writting my story, that I will start posting
once I get my camera, and because I am a sophmore in highschool and I have
homwork; but besides all that I am with you and will do as much as I can.

come together like triforce fragments, and then I will have saved the princess.
This is pretty exciting. I was just posting a "i'm bored" kind of message
and I get a flood of responses. I finally read the threads from the last 24
hours and here's my opinions. I like the Marketplace idea. I think it
could go hand in hand with Castle World. Perhaps reside there when CW is
open for buisness. I'm curious how you all think we could get them
together. I for one can't afford to go to virginia or california for a
brickfest. I'm in wisconsin, Chicago, I could afford. If we could find a
way to photograph them with some standards and put them together like a
mosaic it might work, but those standards would be difficult to agree on.
The other ideas I saw are good too. Building monsters would be fun, but I
think it would be difficult, the organic looking elements in lego are
limited. And building things from movies such as castles would be great,
but again, how fast can you build a castle? I know I can't do it quickly.
I think our answer lies in CW, we need it. Hop Frog, if you need help
please ask us. I am very eager to get started on new projects. But for now
I have to busy myself with partying. The next 3 days are in Green Bay
watching the Redskins lose! A group of us are tail gating the game and
livin it up. It will be such a hang over on tuesday. :( Till then

I'm in. Even though I am quite "new" to the castle scene... New as in I've
been collecting Lego for 18 years and I only just started collecting when
the Knights Kingdom theme came out.
I did manage to get a Night Lord's Castle, and a few ninja sets. I also
got a several Guarded Inns and Blacksmith Shops.... with the return of more
Castle Legends, I should be able to work on building my castle part of my
collection.
I liked building a keep, and hope to someday finish the ramparts and the
rest of the buildings in it (stable, cathedral, barracks, storehouses,
market, etc).
Anyways, I really enjoyed the modular castle at Brickfest. It was amazing,
even for the still small group of participants that put it together.

Good luck, but fancy speeches ain't what you need, you need to be creative.
Build as much as you can, post lots'o'pictures and positive constructive
criticism. For example, I have caught bits and pieces about a modular
marketplace. It has a lot of merit, you can help expand the idea by building
a few booths and positively contributing to the discussion. Also, helping
organizing a building contest does not hurt either. Actions will go further
than words.

Storytelling (my own when I start) and History. Also repeated trips
to Bodium castle when I was a little kid in England. One of the few castles
that you can climb all over and use the battlements, even if it is a little
small.

Although I think none of you knows me in person (and probably never will):
I'm here. Since I live in Germany[*] taking part in any .castle group real
life activities would be a real problem. Nevertheless: I'm here.

You make it sound as if .castle is dead, but I don't think this is the case.
Even if there isn't a real castle line being sold, with the recent legends
serieses coming out, it is clear that LEGO haven't forgotten us. The
modular space projet was, as I understand it, inspired by some of the
modular things in the other rooms, such as the castle room. So castle isn't
"dead".
I also don't think it is necessary to constantly be dissing other lego
subthemes. I build mainly castle now, but I have built other stuff in the
past, will hopefully do so in the future and I enjoy seeing what people can
make in pretty much all the themes out there.
I think if you think that castle needs a boost, the best thing you can do is
build somehing and show it off, and try to give feedback to other people's
MOCs when they post them. There are all kinds of problems with making a
modular or communal system, whether it be the Isle of Mist or something like
making a modular lego town. The one we had at Brickfest did look pretty
impressive, truth be told, but I feel that more people might have gotten
involved if there hadn't been such strict guidelines for how to build. Of
course, undertaking the task to organise something like a modular town is a
considerable one, and Jeff can surely tell anyone who is interested about
some of the problems one may face.
One of the problems with doing a modular castle project is that one needs to
agree on a standardised wall measurements. And each different castlehead has
his or her own idea about what this should look like. In the end at
Brickfest 2002 we avoided the problem, when Troy ended up making all the
walls, but we can't expect to be able to do this at all future events. Of
course every last wall segment doesn't have to be identical, but they need
to be able to connect and not look crap when they are together. It may be
more effective if one instead concentrates on making freestanding structures
that don't need to be attached to a wall, or a particular kind of raod, and
at the next brickfest or whatever, see what you have and throw them
together. This is kind of what worked at BF 2001, although the village that
was created was sorely lacking in an actual castle. Maybe a smaller number
of people can concentrate on building the actual castle, to make the
standardisation of walls easier. I think the more rules that apply for
building, the fewer people will be interested in
building something for a modular project.

If you want proof that there are more castle fans out there, try comparing
prices of space pieces on Bricklink to castle pieces..... You can always
find lots of space torsos for anywhere from 35-55 cents each. Try finding
castle torsoes for this much!

good initative! Count me in!
I've spend the last year building my collection of Ninja Lego sets; now,
just those pesky Kabaya sets and I am there! So, let me join under the
fluttering banner of .castle and lets give those other themes the thrubbing
they deserve. As someone stated on here at one point: The other themes is
just accessory packs for castle!
On a side note: how many of you guys collect Ninja as your prime theme - and
how many use the Ninja theme to supply your "real" castle theme - just
wondering.

me out of my dark ages. I've spend the last few years collecting the Ninja
sets; I am only a few kabaya sets short before I have every Ninja set in my
collection - I was thinking about making some MOC's in the Ninja theme, so
this iniative fits into my scheme rather nicely :). I know this probably
have been done alot of times before, but just to scare the .space people,
how large an army can we muster - that is, how many castle figs you got?
I've got some 200 highly motivated Ninja figs under .castles command :).

Just wanted to let you know that I mostly build with the European style
sets, but usually have an assortment of "visitors" from the east in my town.

The Castle Theme rocks, that is until the Ninja Theme appeared. I still
consider myself a Castle nut, but I don't do many MOC's. I have over 630
Castle and over 700 Ninja minifigs. Sorry, no pix. I haven't added them up
lately and I have recieved more since my last inventory. I really like the
way the Ninja sets look. As soon as pics of the Castle marketplace
standards are shown, I will be buying Lego to make some. Any ideas for
doing MOCs along the same line for the Ninja Theme?

I personally haven't purchased more than one of the ninja sets but instead
aquired the figs online. I've been wanting to build some mocs of feudal
Japanese buildings but I don't have the pieces for them. You should look at
a game called "Shogun: Total War." It is very factual in what types of
builings were used. I would love to build a spear dojo or a cool looking
sword armoury. If you get into a battle you can even get up close to some
of the houses. Seriously consider seaside buildings or boats, as much of
the Japanese culture revolved around the sea.
700 ninja figs! Wow! I'm imagining an army from the east coming to conquer the
the vast wealth of the European city-states. That would make a great story
line.

Hi Hugh,
wow! Impressive collection of figs! I try to collect Ninja figs exlusively,
selling the Castle figs off to try and gain more Ninja sets and figs.
I have actually been toying with several ideas for MOCs the last month or
so; none have been put together, as they are still ideas on the drawingboard
- but to give you - and others who are interested - an idea of what MOC
Ninja sets could be like, I've listed my thoughts and ideas here:
Philosophy of my MOC's:
1) As someone else on here stated, the MOC's should be kept small and
manageable! No 400+ bricks things; this would have the added benefit
of keeping in line with castle sets, where it seems the best sets are
often the small, well thought through sets.
2) The MOC's should mainly consist of easy accessible parts! The MOC's should,
in my opinion, be meant as inspiration for others; keeping the sets in
parts that most people have, with a few special or rare items thrown in,
would make the MOC be built and enhanced around the Lego community.
3) Stand on the shoulders of giants! Many of my MOC's are inspired by sets
allready in the Lego Castle line, but reworked to fit the Ninja theme. So,
look to existing products for inspiration.
The list of the MOC's that toy around in my head (like any wanna-be Lego
developer, I have of course given them set numbers allready :o)):
N1011 "Kami Entrance"
One green baseplate, two pillars made from two 2x2x3 75 slopes each, topped
by 2 horisontal bars of one 1x10 and one 1x14 bricks. Throw in a guard with
a katana - could be a nice little set.
N1012 "Ninja War drum"
a green plate with 4 1x2 bricks topped by one 1x2 tile each. Resting on them
2 half-cylinders 4 bricks across, 2 1x4 radar dishes at the ends. 1 Drummer,
one guard included.
N1013 "Ninja War Galley"
Basically a reworked "Viking Voyager" in white, red and black. As I really
liked the Viking Voyager in the castle line, the Ninjas get one too!
N1014 "Blacksmith"
A large green plate, 4 pillars of round 1x1 bricks rising to a square of
bricks, topped with black roof tiles, 33 degrees at the bottom, 45 degrees
on the top. A few katanas, body armours and an old blacksmith rounds the set
off.
N1015 "Shinto Shrine"
Build basically as the Blacksmith, only larger, it has a small bridge, running
across a stream, that gives the impression that the shrine is built on a
artificial island in a lake. Has a gong in the form of 2 1x4 radar dishes
back-to-back.
N1016 "Bolt Thrower"
Heavy artillery for the Ninjas in the form of a repeater bolt thrower. The
one is familiar with the Warhammer Repeater Bolt Thrower, seen in this link:

Basically the idea is to make the large bow with 2 horns from the Dinosaur
in the adventure theme, use 4-8 4L antennas as bolts and built a slender
stand with 4 legs. Manned by 2 crewmembers.
Hopefully, I will be able to build and take pictures of some of the MOC's
within reasonable time. In the meantime, I would like to hear your opinions,
suggestions for improvements and general comments as this is my first "real"
post on LUGnet.

Fear not!
Flames cannot touch those of us on both lists.
Flame cannot burn in Space and the masters of the Castle rely upon fire,
well mostly daily!
I'm on both lists, I think they are the only theme lists I truly qualify for
as that is what MOC gravitate around for me.

Hey,
I really like the Ninja sets. I haven't done many real MOCs in that them,
but I've got a lot of figs I've picked up on e-bay and these two sets:

Those are both great small fortresses. I haven't gotten any of the larger
fortresses just because the e-bay prices are pretty high. I would like to

I gander that we need no more than 8…mayhaps 9 men

Sorry if that last post was a bit sketchy.
I know im new to LUGNET castle, so here is a bit about myself, because none
of you know me.
I am 11 years old, Castle builder since i was seven, and a devoted lego fan.
I have attended no brickfest type things, but did win one lego starwars
contest. Dont worry, the hovercar I won is now invested in my LEGO airship.
I am currently putting a castle world story together in my own little
middle-earth type world. dunno when it will be online- next year, perhaps.
not sure. But I like the ring of steel unto steel more than blaster fire.
Anyhow, I would like to be included in your Loyal To Castle rollcall.

Does Ikros have the history of the last 3,000 or so years in it?
this is why its not going to be on the web in a while.
and when im putting it on the web, i doubt its going to be a easy job.
Anyhow, heres a preview: (sorry, its still under construction, and i only
have the first chapter written.
The main character is aramir. Unlike garalt, he is already a good 30-40
years old and, like Garadaine, is already a battle-hardened warrior. He is a
ranger, and has no armor, shield or helmet. I prefer flexibility to being
covered in heavy steel. Also, the powers of his sword allow him great speed.
This is the classic quest story. After the capitol castle is attacked by an
orc ambush, and a mighty demon threatens, Aramir and the King decide it
would be best to seek the mighty stones and wake up the mighty High Paladin
King that got turned to stone trying to save the world. So, after forming a
small group of possibly 8 to 10 people, and head on down to a elf village.
from there they learn that the three stones are with a barbarios tribe of
dragonpeople, the other is in a dark abandoned dwarf city, and the last in a
mighty tower that noone is quite sure where it is.
Not only is the rest under development, i dont want to spoil the rest for you.
I am currently working on a map for this whole thing. That is NOT easy.
Now ive got to dig up about 200 lego yoda heads hands and torsos, and 200
regular minifig legs to make my orc army. (itll have to be 200 because i
cant get the 80 million orcs i want.)

Sounds like a great idea to me!
I have had expirience in creating midevil maps for several themes. If all of
you tell me about your kingdoms or realms or whatever, I can most likely put
together a map of it all.

What should we do to make Castle rival of all others? some ideas:
Should we improve on the midevil marketplace, or just let it be?
Why not create a large city, where both the elements of military and
civilian can work together.
From there, make countryside. make a large expanse of land, with towns
and villages and roads and forests and lakes etc.
Create creatures- such as minotours, orcs, dwarves, elves, or regular
wildlife.
add a large Dark capitol to be the main source of evil. cant have a good
story without evil all over the place!
My main idea, which, if others here like it, I am calling Project Realm:
Have a giant countryside, containing perhaps 1000x1000 miles in minifig scale.
The main capitol would be the large city. there would be the land in
between. then we build the dark capitol, and have the classic good vs evil
scenario.
we could build sections of city and countryside and dark capitol and such
and at events could put it all together into a giant display in which we
could have our own adventures and such.
This is not suppost to be like cw or iom. this has totally new characters to
create and anybody can join. my goal is a large interactive land where we
can all have fun. we have perhaps towns or villages or shops or whatever of
our own, but not entire realms or kingdoms (like ikros, valkayria- sorry if
i mispelled that.)
I know this would require lots of planning and organization to build a
sectional land of this size and magnitude.
I think this would be inspiring to a lot of castlers. A plan like this one
could also restore castle to previos glory, as I think the main gole is.
Anybody like this idea?

The purpose, as i understand it, of the roll call was to bring castle back
to its seat as rival of all other themes.
Okay, weve had the roll call (anybody else wanna be on it- please post your
names.) so now we have to start discussing ideas. i posted mine a day or two
ago. Everybody else who thinks they have a good idea, start posting.

The best way to "bring castle back" (did it go somewhere?) is build MOCs and
post them. The more the better. There have been great ideas put forth for
various projects but what we need is more MOCs. Medieval Marketplace MOCs,
Medieval Town MOCs, Landscape MOCs, battle MOCs, fortress MOCs, LDRAW MOCs,
any kind of castle MOC! MOC, MOC, MOC! Build, build, build! Post, post,
post! Oops, got a little crazy there for a minute, sorry. Anyway, I'm
tired of talking about building, let's get building.

want) but those guys, "who carry Blasters" and are going to get pierced by
all the arrows, have some pretty good ideas. And, I will admit, I enjoy
building some futuristic, spacey thing every once in a while. Why do we

The spacers started it...
However, I must say I agree with Josh, (braces for the onslaught) and lets
not bash the spacey ones anymore. To be fully honest, my current big
project, (other than trying to create and acceptable market stall to post
publically) is to build and ISD scale Nebuleon-B Class Medical Frigate from
SW: ROTJ so that I may create a large diorama of the Battle of Endor. My
heart still lies in castle -but my SW fandom has prompted this project.
I will also agree with Josh on the point about the trains - so from now on
we must bash the coal shovelers as much as we do the spaced out spacies!!!

Good, so are a lot of castle people. I was merely pointing out that a lot

I don't think it is in a state of hibernation, which is what I meant be
asking if it went somewhere. It is less active then it was a few years ago,
but that is okay. It has been pretty active lately. What I am getting a
little tired of is that people keep talking about huge ideas but never post
anything. That is what I meant. I am sorry if you thought I was upset or
anything. I wasn't and I seldom am upset about anything lego related.
(More lego heresy here) They are just toys. (AHHH! I can't believe I said
that! :))

(The "rivalry" between Space & Castle has been an ongoing inside joke since
before I joined Lugnet two years ago. For the most part, it has been
harmless fun, like two young brothers teasing each other in the back seat of
a car.)
I think .robotics gets far more posts than any other group, perhaps because
that group includes many posters who are more interested in robotic
application of Lego rather than simple fans of the brick who appreciate all
applications and typically have a longer history with the hobby (that all is
just my theory).
Discounting .robotics, I propose we make a proposal to propose to .space
that we (.castle) should join with them (.space) in a temporary pact to
jointly overthrow .trains. Not only do they get more posts in .trains, but
they also have far greater showroom displays and better organized LUGs
(especially when they mix in Town stuff). The group projects like Moonbase
and Medieval Marketplace are in their youth compared to some of the Train
layouts that tour homeshows and brick festivals. Perhaps, Castle & Space
need to pool their resources and establish dominance jointly before they can
fight it out to see who is better between them.
...Or Castle can try to defeat the smaller enemy (.space) first in hopes
that the spoils of war (i.e. bricks) it gains will support a future campaign
against the larger enemy (.trains)... (Although I have found that a single
brick can derail a Lego train... Hmmmmm....)

well we certainly have a nice band...
just a brief comparison, but I think .space got up over 75 "spacers" to their
cause.
enthusiasts aside, the castle theme still has "pure" castle sets available.
I think that's really cool...
...I'm sure that space sets will come back in its pure form. When that
happens, I'll have to start collecting...

True, True. Currently, however, everything lego starwars (or rock raiders,
or adventurers, etc) is currently taken apart, and all action figures etc of

I had watched .castle for about three months before i could post anything.
However, save the Midevil Marketplace, not much happened.
I did have an idea for a large project and i did post my thoughts. I have
now had more time to work on it. i was waiting for .castle people to say
they liked or did not like it before i posted anything more about it.
And yeah, even if i do plan out my castles and towns (and i am currently
working on a large mine project like Moria from Lord Of The Rings. I even
have a large balrog looking beast that i made from some bionicles i got for
christmas.) I hate talking and thinking and thinking and talking some more
and then thinking it over again- i wanna BUILD.

For my realm project, I just spent an hour drawing a map. I will scan it
to-morrow.
However, Since im only eleven, I dont know how any of you will be able to
see the pictures because i cant put them up on brickshelf, since you have
to be 13 or older to put pictures up from what I have read.
My idea to introduce my Realm project is the small seaside village of barness.
"Barness; this seaside town is an ideal place for smugglers, mercenarys,
soldiers and the criminal.
A few police walk the dusty streets of barnesses slums and marketplace,
but are usually too drunk to be of any help.
The main thing barness thrives off of is its fish and beer. there are
over 7 brewerys and 9 high-class fishermen. Most live in the large mansions
in the north east side of town, which also have strict police that will
inprison you for even looking at something wrong.
The marketplace strectchs down the middle of the village. It is a place
of all peoples and creatures. You can even spot the occasional Raksasha in
this madhouse of smells and sights.
Several sword dealers are also in the village. It is not ideal to buy
thier blades, however; they are usually high-priced and are made flimsily.
Then there is the slums. most of the houses are run down and partially
distroyed. It is not advised to walk in the Deep Slums, for bandits and
theives are everywhere.
There are several places where Smugglers and the like hide; if the
police come after you, go to the slums.
The village of Barness is the farthest from the Shadow Kingdom, so its
defences are nothing but heavy wooden walls that have fallen mostly apart,
and are not gaurded.
However, agents of the Darkness will come here and learn the news of the
Allied Realm.
barness- scum and royalty live together in this small town that relys on
the mighty forces of Tol Arn to protect it from the Darkness that presses
against the borders of the fair lands all the time.
Its crooked industrys make it the best place for a wheeler-dealer salesman.
But dont get a grudge with anyone, or you might dissapear."
Thats all for now. Anybody like it? If so lets work on some building rules
to make this a sectional town and lets BUILD!

Say...that should definitely make for an interesting read,
should you decide to go along and create an animated lego
story using the idea. Actually, it wouldn't be bad to
establish a chronology around the city, and the events
leading to its currently 'rogue' stance. (A suggestion,
anyway.)

This was suppost to be just a small seaside town of the intire Realm project.
Im going to scan the map and email it to you. Barness is in the bottom left
corner.

This is my proposed project for .castle.

Barness Building rules:
Mansions should be on a 32x32 lug base with 1 lug of base around the building.
Two market stalls will fit on 2 16 lug bases. i measurd this from a 32x16
lug base.
Slums can be arranged however you want, as long as they fit on a 16x32 lug base.
I was going to lie about my name, but my sister talked me out of it.

I have gotten a brickshelf account, but the scanner is not talking to me.
ill have to try tommorow. I drew up another map, this one of just Barness.
My idea for the Realm was to have all the castlers participate in it like
with cw, iom, and the Midevil Marketplace.
I was debateing if we could somehow workout a way that minifigs in CW and
the IOM could come apon the Realm, and hence there would not have to be new
people.
However, to do any more in the Realm, I need to know if any other castlers
like it.

great project for you to build in. I just think that too many people's
lands don't fit well together. For instance, my minifigs would freak out

ideas are bad. I am only saying that it sounds like a one person project.

well, josh,I figured that out for myself earlier today :) and dont need
anybody tellin it to me. I thank you for your opinion.
However, I already have my own realm, the Westland Uldeseen.
So, I will most likely drop the Realm Project.
It was a good subject to draw a few pictures on, however.
One last idea- how come we cant just bring back CW and the IOM?
I gave a preview of Uldeseen a while ago ( ?i think? )
The bad part about it is is that i currently cannot find my Aramir minifig :/
Maby the cat ate him. She usually does eat my minifigs.
Now im debateing- which is worse? Tel' Karak zrahl or a minifig eating cat?
If they combined forces, i dont think many castle minifigs would survive that!

As I understand it, the IOM is lost. The people who started it, trashed the
map and it just kinda died. I wanted to see the map, but apparently it's
lost. Maybe the mist covered the whole island and the map, and the computer
it was stored on. And, CW is back. Check out it's website, it seems to be
slow moving at the moment, but when the webmaster is caught up, I'll be up
in dat beesh. As far as cross overs, I think we should try to do it like
comic books, every once in a great while a story crosses over to a
'parallel' world and the characters meet. Take Ikros and Andrastavia's
cross over chapter. I think it worked really well.

Just out of curiosity, might anyone know what program was
utilized to render the maps for island of mist? I was
preparing to assemble three dimensional map for a story
in progress, so any information would constitute much
help. Thanks!

Definitely. I wouldn't like to see too many crossovers,
though. The Andrestavia/ Ikros story was a great read, and
kind of summed up that nagging 'what if?' question I
usually develop when I read several genres at once.
Other than that, hope to see Castle World back to
full speed soon. :)

I think that was done already... cannot recall who did it, but some while
ago when the Guarded Inn was re-issued there was a space version of it - it
was pretty cool. If I'm not mistaken, it is somewhere on Brickshelf.

I think adding the good Dr Carney as #50 would be a nice way to round off
the roll call. I don't think anyone would argue he's an enormous part of
the castle community (even the spacers would admit that). Any objections?

I think it would be best to leave it to people who ask/say they want to be on
the list... If you really need someone for the 50th spot put me... I'm in

Okay, so we all know the purpose of the roll call. im taking it as my job to
keep it going. 78 or more is our goal. to do this, we need more people on it.
I am hoping that there is some suprise in the end. but, to make castle a funner
and not so boring a place, we need the roll call once more. The number is
currently 50.

project going on that's pretty cool :

I've got a project going right that's making me pull my hair and wonder
where the *^%*^%*% all my bricks went.
It's a castle (Doh! Really?!?) on four large gray baseplates and right now
all I have is the skeleton of the "basement" - a ring of BURPs and LURPs
around the perimeter and a network of columns and arches to support what
will eventually be the "ground" of the courtyard.
There is already storage for wine barrels down there (involving a LOT of
those little jumper plates), and a well, and there should be a dungeon and a
treasure room by the end of the weekend, I hope. Need stairs to get down
there, too.
So, most of it is only nine bricks high right now. I'm starting to build up
the facade, it does actually have a working drawbridge, gate, and
portcullis, that section is twenty bricks tall, but only one or two studs
wide - there are no towers behind the wall yet.
Pictures soon of the work-in-progress, I hope. I used up the last few shots
from the roll of Christmas film on my bricks, and will get them put on
CD-ROM when cash flow allows.

Seems the whole roll call draft has slowed
considerably in the last few weeks, and it's
refreshing to see another rectuiting effort. But,
with the goal of seventy eight signatures in
place, I came up with an interesting idea.
Why not search brickshelf galleries for other
castle builders who have not yet signed up for
lugnet and invite them to sign the roll call?
(Assuming email addresses are provided.)
I'm sure there's a lot of people who display
their creations on brickshelf, but don't
frequent lugnet. :(

MOC postings might also draw some attention
to the castle roll call effort. As of current,
I'm working on modelling a rendition of a
dragon, so that should be unveiled sometime
in the near future.

.castle has been really slow with postings

Does the structure fold open, or require
disassembly for access? I hope it's not
the latter. The detail sounds pretty good
though, which reminds me that I need to
purchase a lot of structural elements.
(The only potential source of castle
parts I have is a still assembled guarded
inn, and a small collection of new arches
and windows extracted from sets.) I have
quite a lot of parts to collect before I
can get the basic structure complete.
To avoid drawing off a potentially
money purging supply of light grey bricks,
I've decided to base my work off oriental
and american architecture instead. There's
a slightly less emphasis on large quantities
of bricks, and more use on decorative
elements.

Using the dithered colours isn't that bad, but
drawing off the harry potter sets, I guess that's
the only possibility, eh? I've still yet to
procure a hogwarts castle or gringott's bank,
but bricklink always serves to draw away any
new funds I acquire.
If you're looking for round bricks in dark red,
there's 1x1x5 dark red cylindrical bricks
available in one of the larger adventurer
palaces, but you'll have to wait a few months
for its release, so I guess that means you'll
have to improvise, eh? :)

Im glad my bringing back the roll call did something. Welcome to Loyal to
Castle!
I am familier with the Midevil Marketplace. (i currently do not want to
participate, however.)
Dont feel bad about not having same colored castle bricks. recently, i have
been trying to color code my buildings, but it doesnt work.
My buildins would have alot of detail, but im too lazy to get out my buckets
of special peices. (not always-i just have small working area, and
not much room for more than what im building and my main supply of blocks.)
My most recent buildings, a gaurdhouse, a tower, a street, and the gatehouse
of a much larger city (which i will not build, because i only need a few
pictures out of what i am building.) is totally disco colored.
Red,white,green,brown,yellow,black, and any other color lego has is mixed in.
I am making up for my pictures and buildings by the story im writing.
(My makeshift website should be up soon!)
i am totally with you for a large project. perhaps a add on to the marketplace?

Oh, yes, there are a few sellers on Bricklink that get lots of my money,
too! And I really like the effect I'm getting from the various colors
together. It's more organic than solid gray. I'm sort of a color junkie,
anyway. Just ask some of the sellers on Bricklink who have sent me bricks
that were mislabelled in their inventory!

I've seen the little column bricks in the large adventurers set that is out
now, but they're not what I need. There are sand red 1x1x1 cones, and I
tried them, but they mess with the texture of the walls. Maybe some little
angel at Lego reads this and makes 1x1x1 sand red rounds just for me. Maybe.

Well,
There's the rub.
We are all here in Castle because we cannot quell our excitement for bygone
realms of fantasy.
We all seem to be "modelling some rendition...that should be unveiled in the
future" to quote Sir Hein.
Most of these models are Castles, no secret there.
But they are so very large, time consuming and grand in nature that we are
working toward an end and never communicating the process.
Always we are searching for that elusive moment when our creation is "COMPLETE."
Our problem is as I have said that we do not communicate the process of
building.
Suddenly a MOC appears, but what about the drama of the creation?
I have a proposal here:
What if all of us Dungeon Dwellers in Castle post photos in our Brickshelf
folders, websites or wherever the Kingdom resides as we work? Write a small
note here and share ideas.
I may complete a small bit of some creation over a night or weekend and then
show off the small progress and Neato Feature incorporated into the creation.
Then we could share the evolution, building process and goal we are working
on instead of becoming a pile of 78 hermits (Guilty!). Perhaps
communication here in Castle is so lacking because we've not yet developed
all that new fangled tecknologee over in Space.
Any thoughts?

I just thought I'd mention that the 78 people in the .space roll call
actually all posted in August.
I've received emails from several people since then that want to be added to
the roll call but have turned them down because I think it would kind of
defeat the purpose of a roll call if it was on going. (and a bonus is that
78 is the first year of Space) My plan is to do another roll call next
August..etc.
But on the other hand, if you .castle folk wish it I'm sure .space would be
more than happy to open up the roll call this month and bump it up to 150 or
so. ;-)

I too think it is kind of pointless to keep the roll call ongoing. It
served its purpose when it was originally posted. A continuing roll call
won't make .castle a more active place. Posting more MOCs will. The MM has
done some of that. More projects will do more, but not an extended roll
call. And why do we have to have the same number of people as .space? Who
cares which is bigger? Just build and post. I have posted a number of MOCs
and I try to respond to most MOCs. I will be posting more after I finish my
new house (real house, not lego) and move in. Maybe things are a bit slow
here because people are building or just simply busy in their real life.
Let's stop roll calling and build instead!

Your buildings would have a lot of detail if you weren't lazy or if you had
more space to build? I could build some awesome castles and Medieval towns

Sorry, i re-read it and i can see it was a bit confusing. heres a clarification:
The MM does not strike my interest as much as the IOM did when i first
discovered it. I do think it is a good idea, and is a good group idea, but i,
personally, do not want to build a shop for it.
I was joking when i said about being to lazy to get out the buckets. i just
dont get out the buckets for like this one street i built that im only getting
one picture of for the story. For larger things, liek the gatehouse of Krenn, i
put more detail in. that will get more pictures out of it, and then i will
remodel it for the gatehouse of the biggest lego project i have ever
undertaken: Tol Minor. it will also have great detial.
I apologize for the confusion about my comment on bigger projects.
as i explained above, the mm is just something i dont feel to participate in.
i am glad its there, though. i think that it would be even more attractive if
we did something more with it, such as build a town around it or something.
Remember my Realm Project? that is now melded into my Uldeseen castle world.
so basiclly, i trashed the idea of that as a group project.
But, i think the MM would be better if we could combine the aspects of Military
AND Civillians. just a suggestion.
Sorry if i ramble a bit.

Since you guys are doing the roll call I thought I'd throw my name in. I've
been lurking .castle for a year or so now. "Borrowing" a lot of great ideas.
Anyway I build predominantly castle stuff so I think I fit in here. Guess
since I'm unvieled I'll start posting some messages, maybe even a Moc or two.

What did the roll call do origionally? nothing. it has served no purpose. my
hopes to keeping it going were that with a group mind, and knowing that there
are alot more castlers out there, we could get some inspiration and make a good
group project (see below.)
another good thing of the roll call is, look! see? its bringing castlerer
lurkers into light! its getting us more members!
I think we should keep the roll call going until we have the goal amount of
memebers.
the only reason the roll call didnt do anything is because we let it do
nothing. you said yourself, the MM has done some of making this an active
place. not all.
Lugnet .castle seems to me a relitivly boring place, especially lately.
No posts, no ideas, no mocs.
Even the .castle homepage is boring. it has links to all the castle sets, which
is good, but thats about all. oh, and a couple of links, one or two of them
dead. take a look at the .space homepage! moc of the day, all kinds of links
and recouces, people constantly talking over building techniqes and suggesting
ideas. they have fun things like the waterbags fight backand the like.
seed part of the month, cooler set lists, etc.
Space seems just to be a naturally more interesting place. especcialy since
most of the spacers from what i can see are really gung-ho about their
creations and projects.
Here, we just sort of sit around and chat about castles we build and think
about the good old days of castle.
i know some of you think that castle is active and such, but i dont see much
activity myself.
Im done rambling now too. (for now, at least)
i htought it over, and here is the most flexible disign i could think of for a
midevilmarket add on to make it a large fun group project.
Build a sectional city around the marketplace that will include mansions,
houses, etc that is in a city. create a evil, and we can build a sectional
city for the evil.
From there, we can mount ongoing campaigns to explore and conquer the lands
outside of the city. Build towns, trade land and tools and cattle etc with
others. have adventures in the land and explore unqauncered lands.
create armies to keep the evil away from the free lands, or black armies to
overrun the free lands.
is this a good idea? this is all i have for it. no standards, no names, no
premade towns, nothing. just an interesting idea.
NOTE! these are just my ideas. nothing more. this is just what i think.

Hey, wasn't there a cool Castle FAQ on that side bar? I recall getting a
free minifigure for submitting to its development. :) Whatever happened
to that?

I admit to have been doing more space stuff lately myself, as is my nature
to bounce back and forth from time to time. But that doesn't mean I don't
still love castle!
Purhaps castle can take a cue from the spacers and develop a cool sidebar.
Space has the 'seed part of the month', why can't other themes do that?
Space has the 'computer of the month', why can't castle have a minifig
accessory of the month? ...Is there a castle curator on Lugnet? All he/she
needs to do is start a discussion of what people want on the sidebar (that's
what happened in space anyway).
