I think you are right to some degree, Eric. We have gotten acclimated to the
train show phenomenon, although the occasional world record event type thing still
jolts the senses:-) Imagine the GMLTC's frustration, because we choose to show
the same layout every time-- what can one say after 2 or 3 shows?
I think what's important is 1) the quality level of layouts continues to escalate,
and it will continue to get even better as LD provides bulk bricks and more train
sets; and b) it's all still new and jaw-dropping to the GP. I don't think they
will ever reach the ho-hum stage for LTC layouts.
But Steve has a point that we need to be supportive of each other and be
encouraging each other's efforts, especially here in .trains.org. This is one of
my favorite NGs, because most here have "been there, done that" with regard to
train shows, and have that commonality to share. Having said that, I hope that
one day we can all organize a National (International?) LEGO Train Convention some
day, because even though it's great to know you all online, it's even better to
meet F2F (as I found out after having met other LTCers at the Train Summit in
NYC).
