Hi Eric,

thanks for the links into your samsonite sets gallery - I wasn't aware about
that cool resource and have bookmarked it immediately!

I agree with your guess, that Frank might have had a 111 AND a 4.5V motorized
set like 107 (or more likely a 100 or 103). The picture of the motorized engine
on the floor might come from a mini-catalogue picture, the motor set or the
building instruction - all these papers have often shown how to build motorized
versions of engines. (Although I have to admit that my European 111 instruction
is the exception to this "rule" and shows nothing more than to build the train
itself.)

The box design of his sets appears to be the 111 in US version and LEGO has
always had different box designs for each set afaik. So I would still bet on 111
as Frank's first train set.

Ben, I've done some further research -

I just placed some scans of my 1968 Samsonite catalog online here:
http://home.comcast.net/~strand_lego/3369-US/
I don't think that 100 or 103 were available in the USA so I'm still guessing

I'm going to verify at home tonight, but I have the 103 with the box and I'm
quite sure it didn't come from EU

I'll have a boo at the box as well as the instructions...

Hey Dave,

Yes please let us know.  While doing my research on old Lego sets, I sometimes
find that USA and Canada have the same sets.  Then other times Canada will have
some sets the same as Europe, but they are not found in the USA.  Then other
times Canada will have a set number that matches Europe, but it is a different
set number in the USA.

One famous example comes to mind.  The Yellow Castle.  In the USA it is #6075.
In Canada and Europe it is #375.  Go figure??

If I'm not mistaken I think my version of the USA castle actually says 6075 and
375 both.  As a child this always intrigued me.  I also checked recently and
mine came with two of each visor included.  I guess TLG figured we would lose
these.

Eric

OK Eric, go check when you get home! :-)

I have 10 #6075 (10! where the hell did he get 10! - from a 1983 Kmart sale for
only $23 each) and they all say #6075.  BUT the instructions all say #375/#6075
(Eric, that is what you might be thinking about).  Even European #375 sets have
instructions that say #375/#6075.  But if you have one that has both numbers on
the box itself..... I can only say.... EBAY!!!

(...) OK, I agree. My box says 6075 and the instructions say 375/6075. Eric (19 years ago, 1-Mar-05, to lugnet.trains)
