I was hoping to find an F4 Phantom or a Corvair, but no go.  While I have no
experience in this type of modeling, this is very inspiring.  It would be great
to try my hand at something in this scale.  I just have to dig up those pics of
the RF-4's that my father used to fly in the 70's.

Beautiful stuff!

A Chevy Corvair would indeed be nice. It has a very uncluttered and sleek look,
but I'm not sure whether I could get a LEGO version to look sleek enough.
I used to have an F-4 Phantom, a US Navy F-4S. I demolished it about five years
ago in order to build the Vigilante, but it really shouldn't be missing from a
collection of famous navy jets. Sadly, I never was very happy with mine. In my
opinion it is a very, very difficult aircraft to build. It has many of the
problems I encountered in the Skyhawk. It has wheels that retract into the wings
as well as a coke-bottle fuselage. The shape of the air-intakes and splitter
plates is horribly complicated and I never could get the nose or cockpit canopy
to look right.
Back when I demolished it I was unaware of the existence of something like LDRAW
and I didn't have a digital camera yet. Putting the Phantom into LDRAW would
have been quite a chore anyway. Instead I made some pretty detailed drawings of
it. Just send me an e-mail if you're interested in a photocopy or scan (I don't
own a scanner, but I'm sure I can arrange use of one). With some effort, and
lots of LEGO, it could look great.

Regards,
Ralph
