You know with the Lego Group, they'll always churn out an emergency type set
out every year in the town theme.  That is a given...Fire Fighter's HQ and
lift truck (circa 2000) were the last sets out in the "emergency sub-theme"...
its probably time for another police station to come out....and hopefully not
as large and bulky as the last (I already have a large police headquarters in
my town, I didn't need or appreciate the last police station offering)

Emergency Services:
I would like to see a full compliment of emergency services vehicles and
buildings; fire station, hospital and police station.  The buildings
shouldn't be as grandiose as the most recent monster police stations (6332),
which are too large and make the cost to potential purchasers far too high.

Super rescue center wasn't too bad, but needed to be cut up and the buildings
needed to be slightly larger....well the police station was a pretty good
size, just needed a couple of additional rooms, like a jail or whatever...
[see my last post on SWAT teams and suberban station!!]

Within each range there should be really small sets (e.g. small police
motorbike) to enable people to start somewhere with a subtheme without
massive outlay.  Then some sort of intermediate sets such as a police jail
van and then a slightly larger set such as a road-block complete with
stinger mats.

This is definitely a good marketing plan, have three tiers of sets, small
($4-10), medium ($12-20), and large (above $20 but not over $100)

Utilities:
A town needs its utilities and so needs things like water vans, telco vans
(complete with phonebox to repair), electricity vans, etc.

I like my telephone repair, even though it is too juniorized and looks a
bit odd, it has a telephone with it, and all the tools needed for repair.
I also had a "electricity repair vehicle"  (utility lift truck)
For the concept to apply, you could have one utility truck to have a
working boom (like the fire fighter's lift truck but smaller (looking like
the fire tender in 6385 and in yellow) this could be the medium-priced
set in the utility sub-theme.  For the small-priced set, you could have
"project commander" a smaller "SUV" that looks like the utility truck...

The large set "Utility Commission" would have one or two bays for the
utility trucks, have one utility truck (this one would have crane-like
hook to lift light standards and telephone poles), and it would have a
trailer on the back that would have "wire" (hose from the fire dept sets)
spun up, maybe also have a small back-hoe to dig the hole where the
light standard/telephone pole would go.  The building itself would also
have a modest office/customer service area for mini-figs to state their
complaints....

Transport Services:
Bus!  I think a six-wide bus would be great with a bus shelter that has
adverts.  This set could be really detailed with things such as a timetable
on the stop pole, adverts on the side of the shelter and bus, and a wee
bus-stop sign.  Make it a double-decker for maximum playability.

I like this idea, but the soccer sets already have a bus, just add some
nifty stickers, and maybe bring out a companion bus stop. (this could be
the "small" set.  For the large set, how about a "Bus Terminal" looking
almost like Greyhound.

Houses:
There should be a variety of houses available to accommodate a variety of
budgets; from the tiny little cottage (something like 6374) and then a
slightly bigger house (6372) and then a really big detailed house like that
big Paradisa thing, complete with swimming pool and other stuff (someone
want to flesh this one out?).  Another cool item would be a miniature block
of flats complete with working (i.e. hand-cranked; don't want a 'batteries
not included/ are duff' situation) lift to take the peeps from the entrance
foyer (revolving door anybody?) to their flats.  To keep it reasonable,
there would only actually be three floors, each containing one flat, but it
would have to have some groovy architectural features such as bay windows to
make it look good and take town away from the blandness-fest that many town
buildings have been.

Here's a good idea, again based on both small/medium/large, and on
modularity.  Have a medium-sized small-type room, add to it a furniture
"pack" either a living room set, bedroom set, or kitchen/dinete set.
Add a swimming pool set (the paradisa poolside) or use the standard
green baseplate.
Use 1 room for a "cottage", use 2 or 3 rooms for a modest house, and combine
more (like 6 or 12) to make a nice sized appartment complex.  For the
large set, you could have a "condo parking lot"

Commerce:
Lots of shop type buildings.  These could all be quite small things like a
grocers, a general store, motor-components supply, etc.  These small sets
would perhaps come with their own delivery van to make it more interesting.
Perhaps a bigger set would be a supermarket with an articulated lorry for
delivery.  I can see some supermarkets being interested in a tie-in with
this.  Naturally the ubiquitous petrol station would be required.

Again, see one of my previous postings about this: I like a modularized
shopping plaza...with a small shop, large shop, restaurant, and bank
(complete with mandatory atm machine), you could put them together in a
"downtown" setting and have a "flat" add-on on top.

Industrial:
Funny, but there never appears to be any industry components to town.  How
about a warehouse with a forklift and lorry with crates?  Or a small
manufacturing plant?  These could perhaps tie in with delivering to the
shops.

For this, you need a definitely need a couple of factories, but the
problem with this is the cost of a total "shop".  For the factory
idea, you need a large set called "shop floor" have two add-ons:
medium-sized metal shop tools (and brazier to melt the metal)
or medium-sized wood shop tools (lathe, saw(s), and kiln), add to
it a break area and office, and it wouldn't be too bad (also a
parts room, and assembly line add-on wouldn't be too bad either.

Modularisation I think has to be the way forward, so that a small set can function perfectly on its own, but when combined with a larger set provides enhanced playability. Designing sub-ranges that link together like the examples you site (including (...) (23 years ago, 22-Jan-01, to lugnet.town)
