I think your categories are too small. As someone stated, 1000 pieces makes
only a medium-sized model. The organ in my church might use more than that.

I still like subjective size categories. The contest guidelines may quantify
what is a "small", "medium" and "large" model, but the voters should decide
which models qualify for which categories.

Example 1:

I submit a train station that I think fits the piece-count of the "medium" size
category, so I describe it as a medium-sized train station. But I've used my
large pile of 1x12's and baseplates and the voters don't think it's
medium-sized and don't vote for it.

Example 2:

I submit a train station that I think fits the piece-count of the "medium"
category. But I've used my large pile of 1x12's and baseplates and it's pretty
large, so I describe it as a large train station and it's voted on in that
category.

The problem with creating too many categories (and size categories multiply the
total number of categories) is that there will be few entries in each category.
For example, if we have three size categories for train-related buildings and
two small ones, one medium one and five large ones are submitted, the small
ones haven't competed much, and the medium one not at all. It'd be an empty
victory for me to win an award without challenge.

I also hope there are type-independent awards such as...

Best use of detail
Best engineered structure
Most clever use of pieces
Best use of standard pieces

For example, you might consider a bridge's truss design and a train station's
roof design as contenders for the "Best engineered structure" award, though
they are completely different types of structures.

My revised category suggestions...

Best small building, scene or structure (500 pieces)
Best medium-sized building, scene or structure (2500 pieces)
Best large building, scene or structure (>2500 pieces)
Best small vehicle (100 pieces)
Best medium-sized vehicle (500 pieces)
Best large vehicle (>500 pieces)

with additional type-independent awards...

Best use of detail
Best engineered structure
Most clever use of pieces
Best use of standard pieces

Size categories would have piece-count guidelines but modelers are free to
submit their creations in any category. Voters will consider the
appropriateness of the modeler's description. Vehicles over 2500 pieces should
be entered in the "Best large building, scene or structure" category. I think a
cruise ship is better judged as a structure than a vehicle and wouldn't compete
fairly against a smaller model, no?

It's not perfect but we'll never get perfect.

For prizes, I like the web-graphic idea.

Amy
