In the spirit of the recent Classic Space building contest, I'm proposing
(and am willing to organise) a building contest for us TOWN junkies. I have
some ideas of how we can do it (and I've set up a placeholder page on LUGNET
for it, same as Todd did for the Classic Space comp) but I'd like everyone
interested to have a say in how it works, so please reply to this message
with your ideas.

Here's my thoughts, to get us started...

The idea is to produce the best looking models, not necessarily ones that
look like Lego sets.
Scale can be minifig, classic, or other. Fabuland?
Anyone can enter, up to a maximum of _n_ times
Anyone can vote, whether they entered or not. One vote per person. (This is
different from the CS comp).
Should this be just buildings, or vehicles as well? (opens the door to ships
and planes as well as cars and trucks)

Should be anything that could be found in a modern town.  That doesn't mean
everything has to be "Modern" but everything should be something common to most
towns in a modern world.

Entries in by Feb 15th
Votes in by Feb 28th

Well I have some stuff I would enter but anything "new" would be a huge "?".
This is mostly because my wife has gone back to work which means I am alone
with the baby durring the day and have to do my work during naps and after my
wife gets home.  That doesn't leave much time for building :(.  I will try
though.

Include photos and DAT-only entries? in separate categories?

This depends.  If the DAT entry includes pieces that LEGO has produced and in
colors they have produced then the DAT could possibly be in the same catagories
as the Photo entries.  If the DAT includes parts in colors that LEGO never
produced or parts are not "connected" in a way that would hold them together in
real life then those entries should be in a separate catagory.

Possible Categories (not mutually exclusive):
Multiple building group (eg "Main Street" type scenes)(not an entire
town layout)
Single building, residential (everything from cottage to hi-rise
apartment block)(or split by size)
Single building, commercial/industrial (including Train buildings?
churches?)(split by size?)
   Train/monorail related buildings
   Lego-set type buildings
   Structures (bridges, etc...)

These seem good...

Personal vehicles (split by 4-wide, >4 wide?)

Well I think you probably need to add 6-wide in the same catagory as the
4-wides.  Even LEGO makes some 6-wide vehicles.

   Commercial/Industrial vehicles (size split?)

Hmmm..  Maybe this is where the 6-wide vehicles should go.

   Boats/ships?

Sure

Categories by model size (# pieces)

# of pieces is tough.  I don't keep track and could only make a bad guess as
the count.  Plus if you have an interior to your building it increases your
piece count dramatically where you could have a much bigger building with the
same piece count but no interior.

I think this could be a lot of fun. Thoughts please!

Sounds like fun to me.
