I've just thought of an explanation why some 2L axles have a notches a
quater of the way along. I reckon it's so you can grip the end with a nail
and pull the axle out of a socket hole, It's never occured to me before.

Boy are those little notches handy, too! I remember noticing the notches very soon after I left my dark ages. Most of my 2 long axles from before my dark ages have tooth marks from being removed from some other Technic piece. And I REALLY dislike (...) (24 years ago, 1-May-01, to lugnet.technic)

The 16t gear in particular shown significent difference. With a new 16t I can plug (...) (24 years ago, 2-May-01, to lugnet.technic)
