    Any musical instrument? —Amnon Silverstein
Has anyone made a musical instrument out of Lego? I've searched around and I haven't seen anything. I'm not sure what sort could be made. Lego isn't air-tight enough for a wind instrument, it damps out vibration, it has nothing bell-like, no obvious (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

(...) Nothing particularly clever... but it should be possible to "tune" one of the electric motors and play notes from an arbitrary scale on it. The faster you drive the motor, the higher the frequency emitted, and vice versa. This works really (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

You may be able to make an electronic keyboard using an RCX, but you'd have to use some non-lego to get any decent range of notes.... ROSCO (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

(...) Na, with a rotation sensor for pitch it would be easy. Or use a light sensor, but that would be harder to control. Jürgen (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

Re: Any musical instrument? —Ross Crawford
I s'pose. But it's not really a keyboard, then, unless you can get each key to set the sensor to the appropriate position... And it's always gonna be limited to monophony unless you can get multiple RCXs to talk to each other...oh, no, I feel (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

(...) Using a non-lego element(ie fishingline) a harpsichord could work. Deap sound box under vs a soundingboard should give air room to spread and amplify a bit. Might try it myself. RCXed tension motor pitch bender for leslie/vibrato/triggered... (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

Re: Any musical instrument? —Henry Lim
Myself being a keyboardist, I've been seriously considering making a single manual harpsichord (with the strings non-LEGO, of course). I've worked out workable mechanisms for the key action. However, it'll take a while to collect the parts for 4 (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

Re: Any musical instrument? —Ross Crawford
Hmmm. I imagine a piano action wouldn't be out of the question, either. The main problem I can see is with the strings - if you're looking at 4 octaves, thats 48 fairly tight strings, which is going to put a fair bit of strain on whatever base you (...)          Re: Any musical instrument? —Amnon Silverstein
I think this is an understatement. I think it would be a huge challenge to build something strong enough. A piano key, however, would be a really cool project. I saw a diagram of one once, and I thought about trying to build a Lego model of a single (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

Re: Any musical instrument? —Henry Lim
I'm on the brink of stringing up my full-sized, playable LEGO harpsichord. But for fun, I made a miniature "mock-up" version (out of LEGO, of course) of what the final instrument will eventually look like: (URL) slightly bigger than Miniland scale, (...)      (...) One word: Jikes! (...) I don't even want to start thinking about the amount of pieces that would require. Hope all goes well with the stringing! /Tobbe (URL) (22 years ago, 3-May-02, to lugnet.technic, lugnet.build)

(...) I will be interesting to see how you create the sounding board and the tuning pegs to hold the strings. Keep us informed, can't wait to see & hear it. Ralph (22 years ago, 5-May-02, to lugnet.technic, lugnet.build)
