| | | Has anyone made a musical instrument out of Lego? I've searched around and I haven't seen anything. I'm not sure what sort could be made. Lego isn't air-tight enough for a wind instrument, it damps out vibration, it has nothing bell-like, no obvious (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

| | | | (...) Using a non-lego element(ie fishingline) a harpsichord could work. Deap sound box under vs a soundingboard should give air room to spread and amplify a bit. Might try it myself. | | | | Myself being a keyboardist, I've been seriously considering making a single manual harpsichord (with the strings non-LEGO, of course). I've worked out workable mechanisms for the key action. | | | | | Hmmm. I imagine a piano action wouldn't be out of the question, either. The main problem I can see is with the strings - if you're looking at 4 octaves, thats 48 fairly tight strings, which is going to put a fair bit of strain on whatever base you (...) | | | | | | I think this is an understatement. I think it would be a huge challenge to build something strong enough. A piano key, however, would be a really cool project. But for fun, I made a miniature "mock-up" version (out of LEGO, of course) of what the final instrument will eventually look like: (URL) slightly bigger than Miniland scale, (...)
