Yep. The main difference is that in a car gearbox, the slip rings are generally all on the same shaft, mad possible by the vastly larger selection of gear wheel sizes in "real life" 8?) ROSCO (...) (25 years ago, 16-Nov-00, to lugnet.technic)

This reminds me of something I was considering building about a year ago, though not out of Lego.
