Ho-HO!  Wow, so there are TWO (maybe 3?) kinds of rubber tubing?

1.  Real pneumatic tubing, as seen in pneumatic sets and in the 1998 Aquazone
   sets, and
2.  This new thinner rubber tubing, as seen in 8002 Destroyer Droid and
   8503 Scuba.

How does the old black rubber tubing from 483 Alpha-1 Rocket Base compare?
That's not shiny like the newer pneumatic tubing, but is it the same
thickness?

I dont have the tubing from 483 but I suspect it is the same as the tubing in
854/948 Go-cart (which I also dont have!).

To my knowledge
this tubing came with one of the throwbots, the 8250/8299 as the connection
between the regulator and scuba tank and the 8002 in brown.

I can confirm this, at least for 8002 and 8503 -- just checked, and they are
the same diameter, and both definitely thinner than regular pneumatic tubing.

But these still aren't Flex System tubes, right??  A Flex System inner-cable
does fit sorta cleanly into the thinner rubber tubes, but gives LOTS of
resistance when turning or sliding -- unlike the real Flex System plastic
outer tubes, which glide most wonderfully.  :)

The flexible tubing has a slightly smaller id and od compared to the hard
plastic flex tubing (which taken with flex cables as a system is one of the
more elegant systems in Technic and has been highly underused by Lego, but I
digress) but as you stated provides entirely too much resistance to be useful
as a flex tube. Personally I consider them to be two different types of tubing.

So, my personal taxonomy, which is always subject to change :)

Flexible Elememts
  Flexible tubing
    Soft plastic:
      1. Pneumatic tubing
      2. Small dia flexible tubing
      3. Flexible hoses
    Hard Plastic:
      1. Flex tubing
      2. Corrugated tubing

and the tubing from 483-854 may constitute yet another type.
