Flex tube material

I have noticed that thin flex tubing (Technica section 050) appears in
at least two different materials.  A stiff tube, which will bend with force
and has some memory of bends, appears in most of my sets (8286
3-in-1 Car, 8444 Air Enforcer, 8445 Indy Storm, all three 800x droids,
9749 RIS 1.5).  The two sets (8444, 8445) which use the flex cable
(Technica section 049) to make push-pull connections both use the stiff
tube around it.  But 8002 Destroyer Droid also contains some brown
flex tube for decoration, and this stuff is very flexible, even more than
the cable.  It's the same size and fits in the same connectors as the
stiff tube, and it feels just a little soft and tacky to the touch.  I don't
think it would hold a body line very well unless it was a tight curve,
as in 8002; you couldn't substitute it for a flexible cross axle in the
recent cars, for instance.

Does anyone have more information on when and where the different
materials appeared?  Are there any more kinds, besides the two I have
seen?

peace,
Chris Jeris

(...) I noticed the floppy tubes too, there are short pieces of it in yellow in both 8250 (search sub) and 8503 (throwbot scuba). I tend to think of it as thin pneumatic tubing, rather than floppy flex tubing, perhaps because in both these sets it's (...) (25 years ago, 23-Feb-00, to lugnet.technic)

(...) Cool! I've found that the traditional flex tub straws are a bit too rigid for my taste, so a more "floppy" version fits my taste just perfectly! How about the tan flex system straws seen in 8001? Are they of the floppy, bendy type too, or the (...) (25 years ago, 24-Feb-00, to lugnet.technic)

(...) I think you've confused Flex System tubing with Pneumatic tubing. The rubber tubes which come in 8002 and 8250, for instance, aren't Flex System tubes -- they're rubber pneumatic tubes. --Todd (25 years ago, 24-Feb-00, to lugnet.technic)
