There is a square hole built up by plates... in reality, it is very very
stable.  As for reports of the x-wing falling off, well, it is a much much
heavier model than the UCS TIE.  It hasn't happened to mine, but I can see how,
if the stand is placed in it's forward position (horizontal flight), the center
of mass of the model + stand is too high for perfect stability, and the whole
thing could topple over.

BTW, if you put the UCS TIE on a glass table in the horizontal stand position,
it also has a tendency to want to topple over, albeit not as readily as the UCS
X-wing.
