Non-lego items?...Oh, isn't it great sin?..:-D Especially when much more
purist methods are exist.
Just interchange the pegged bricks with appropriate prick/1x4 technic beam
combination and use friction pegs (the black ones), especially the ones from
1980's, which connects considerably stronger then the newer ones. I know
there is no dark gray technic beams, but the color scheme of the fighter is
not looking to have a purpose, so a black or light gray one should also
work.
