does anyone know anything about these sets/pieces

The pieces?  No.  The sets, on the other hand:

3x Advanced Designer: June release (evidentally not early like the SW/Bionicle
sets)

4589 RC Nitro Flash: Listed in LUGNET's database as a 2002 release.  I can't
find an entry for it in either the 2002 or 2003 Product Book, and I'm not sure
why it was omitted (the Toa Nuva were July 2002, but they got carried over into
the 2003 PB since they weren't listed in the 2002 PB).  Regardless, it first
listed in the Summer 2002 S@H catalog, so you might be able to still find it at
retail.  Unfortunately, there's no Peeron inventory for the set, and I can't
find any matching canopy pieces either, so they might not have been used in
other sets yet.

If you mean the 1/2-canopy part itself, it's well-known,
if only from the 2002 Ep II Slave I (where they are in
both sand-green and dark blue).  The middle canopy-part
is of course new, and in trans-black they'd also be new
   new new new.

And while the idea of an "expandable canopy system" is
very, very neat, I noticed that the "middle" sections
still have partial sides (about a brick in depth).  But
I like the rounded-slope system, because you could take
those together with the new bullet-train canopy and get
   some very, very odd geometries.

(...) Geez, I just now noticed that the same pieces come 2x each in the RC Nitro Flash in light-green. I feel blind... (...) I believe I mentioned something about the partial sidewalls, but I'm also fairly certain that the "new" bullet-train canopy (...) (21 years ago, 1-Jun-03, to lugnet.space)

(...) I don't know about you, but when I consider the idea generalised to be an "expandable curved slope system" (which it is already to some extent), I begin to get rather excited! Cheers, Paul (21 years ago, 2-Jun-03, to lugnet.space)

(...) I can't remember exactly what they look like from the showroom (and unfortunately my photo is at a bad angle for viewing the cockpit), but they do appear to have a curved partial sidewall. It's better than the old square-cut canopies, but it (...) (21 years ago, 1-Jun-03, to lugnet.space)
