Hmmm... are you sure you weren't dreaming?  :-)  The first "official" Lego
robots at Minifig scale that I remember came out circa 1994 in the Spyrius
line, and they were made from the standard set of minifig pieces.

Are you thinking of the "Crater Critters" set, by any chance?  They were
robotic and made from common pieces, but much bigger than minifig scale.

Of course, there's nothing stopping you from building your own.  Here's a
recipe for a robot I used to build as a kid.  It comes out looking a little
like the Lost in Space (TV show) Robot.  Bear with my ASCII art...

You need:

a 1x2 plate
a 1x1 round brick of some transparent color: the stud should have a hole in
the middle
a 2x2 cylinder brick
2 1x1 transparent plates (red & green, usually)
1 1x2 plate "laser", um... from above it looks vaguely like this...
   _______
   ||O O||
   ||---||
   ||   ||

(Oh, that's awful -- sorry.  It's the 1x2 plate with two little "handles"
poking out of the sides, that minifigs can *almost* grab comfortably.)

a 2x2 plate turntable
another 2x2 cylinder brick

Assemble pieces as listed, top to bottom:

1x2 plate centered on stud of 1x1 round brick...
...centered on 2x2 cylinder
..."laser" attached under front edge of cylinder as arms
...and 1x1's attached behind arms (like taillights :-)
...put onto 2x2 turntable
...put onto 2x2 cylinder

Poorly drawn from the front:

     ======    <----- 1x2 plate
       []      <----- 1x1 round brick
       []
     +----+    <----- 2x2 cylinder
     |    |
     +----+
   O========O  <----- 1x2 laser in front, 2 1x1's in back
     ======    <----- 2x2 turntable
     +----+    <----- 2x2 cylinder
     |    |
     +----+

It's roughly minifig scale.

I seem to remember a classic space set that only consisted of 5 mf scale robots made from common pieces. Ring any bells? I scrolled through the set listings, but the closest I could find had just a couple robots paired with some spacemen. Any help (...) (25 years ago, 27-Jan-00, to lugnet.space)
