Hi, Nathan,
I truly suspect that the issue is the Toshiba hardware of this particular
laptop model. I have 3 Dell desktops, 3 laptops. They all have built in
usb ports, either 2.0 or 1.0. They all work fine, with the identical setup
up, even with full power for the laptop ( i.e. hooked up to the wall
outlet). I even tested with different usb 1.0 devices, such as video
camera, printer, etc. They all work fine with my other computers, but not
this toshiba model. Also tested with LEGO original mindstorm rcx sofware.
Same symptom... what makes it really hard is that it crashes my laptop at
the very first attempt for connection between the rcx and the tower.
Due to time restraint, I have not gone through the last alternative yet, ie.
running nqc/windows and/or nqc/linux. That will be my last trial, I presume
before I give up with using this toshiba...!!!
By the way, I recommend not to purchase toshiba if you are a person who is
an even slightly computer handy person (I got this machine as a present). I
opened the back of the laptop to put in a new hard drive, no big deal. I
was told later that Toshiba voids the warranty and provides no support. I
asked them proof from warranty statement, but I got no direct response.
Anyhow, as soon as I get the time to try out the nqc alternative, I'll
update this thread.
