That ought to show my admiration for this, I think.

Thanks, Larry, and thanks to all who posted or emailed.

Anyhow... How mandatory is the bridging of the three outputs together? Can • one
just route the three outputs independently to different layout sections? • Or is
it key that they be connected together close to the source?

It's important that the motor outputs share the load as evenly
as possible.  A stalled train motor can draw as much as
750ma, while a single motor output on the RCX can only
output about 550ma.  Routing the motor outputs individually
to different tap points on the layout would introduce a
small but variable amount of resistance to each motor
output as the locomotive (i.e. load) moves around the
track. This would cause the current supplied by each
output to vary depending on the distance from the loco.
So, bridging at the source eliminates this problem.

I have noticed that when the locomotive is far from the
power tap (like in another room), it will slow down because
of track resistance.  I could see adding extra wires from the
bridged outputs to different points on the layout to help
reduce this "droop".  I haven't tried this yet, and I'm not sure
if the standard Lego wire (like the 10' sections from
Exploration Mars) are of a large enough gauge to make
enough difference.  Maybe someone has tried this already
with the standard train regulator?

i have a question concerning how the DCC signal is sent Is it just sort of a "rider" on top of the power similar to X-10 home automation signals? If so could not the RCX be protected with diodes and used in conjunction with a standard train (...) (21 years ago, 30-May-03, to lugnet.robotics.rcx, lugnet.trains)
