Musings regarding Handyboard Expansion & Interfacing

More "musings":- ***...*** * MUSINGS ON THE SUBJECT OF HANDYBOARD INTERFACING * ***...*** * Generating Chip Selects and Address Signals * ***...*** These are my thoughts on (re)generating some needed signals on an expansion board to allow more (...)   RE: DC10 turning

(...) A _long_ time ago, Dave Williams and I got into a discussion about tank treads and turning etc. I ran some experiments on a Radio Shack Sherman Tank toy I was using (the original "RoboTank" in my case) In a nutshell we proposed a mathematical (...)   Re: piggyback pentium/powerPC

(...) Pentium and low power can hardly be used in the same sentence. (...) If someone wants to design a piggyback 32 bit machine for the handy board, I will suggest the 68360. It is really powerful, and has all the glue logic in it for several megs (...) (28 years ago, 7-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  DC10 turning

Hi Jeff (...) I had the same problem. I got some improvement by running the treads in opposite directions. Turns real quick then! And the drive tread does not have to carry the whole force of the turn plus "slip" or pivot the stationary tread. Keith (...) (28 years ago, 7-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  piggyback pentium/powerPC

I realize that what I'm asking for is hardly cheap, but I'd like to piggyback some real computing power with the handy board. Can anyone suggest components for: - a small low-power pentium/powerPC with min 32MB RAM and a pair of serial (...) (28 years ago, 7-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Re: Charging the battery

Make sure your adapter is 12v, 500 mA. If you have a voltmeter, measure the open-circuit voltage (when it's plugged into the wall, but not operating anything); you should get around 17 v. -F (...) (28 years ago, 7-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Glue/Caulk thread

GE's Silicone 2 is an amazing adhesive when you want to mount something firmly but might want to be able to peel it off and reposition it later without damaging the surface. Again, its flexible, cures overnight (for the most part) and doesn't have (...) (28 years ago, 7-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Re: Electronic Compass

(...) I was the one who had the Vector-2X working with the Miniboard not using the SPI bus. I won't try and talk you out of it, it may just work for you. Make sure you get the current documentation from Precision, the original docs I got from them (...) (28 years ago, 6-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Electronic Compass

OK, I finally got the prices for the KVH C100 and the Vector 2X electronic compasses, both referred to as low cost. The KVH is $700, the Vector 2X is $50. EASY decision, even though the Vector's accuracy isn't as good. It'll be here tomorrow. Now, (...) (28 years ago, 6-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Re: my bot

(...) I found the best way to mount micro switches is silicon bathtub caulk. It is flexible, and strong. (28 years ago, 6-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

Musings regarding Handyboard Expansion & Interfacing

I have been playing with my Handyboard (from Digital), and am still waiting on the little mobile platform I decided to start out on. (My retired father-in-law is a mechanical creator, & is PC literate, so I am planning on getting him involved after (...) (28 years ago, 6-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Manipulator Question

Hello, Could someone please tell me if there is a (not-so-expensive) manipulator which can be driven by HB? I'm quite interested in driving the manipulator to draw a text on a sheet of paper. Or, do I have to look for a plotter instead? I'm using (...) (28 years ago, 6-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Re: my bot

(...) Heh, I ripped the front end off as well. Other than that, I did the exact same mods. Wow. :-) (...) I've got the sonar going - it's neat for looks, but I'm still working on putting enough code behind it to make it fast and functional - servos (...)   Re: jbmiller and Hammatzu IR

Hi Patrick, I assume that you're using the stock S4282/LED setup? It is possible to get better range using a slightly different configuration. The range is largely a function of the the LEDs intensity. Since the S4282 modulates the LED at 1/16th (...) (28 years ago, 6-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Interactive C Manual

Is there a Interactive C Manual for the Handy Board? I saw one but it was Post Script. I need a PDF file. I would like somthing I can download and get a hard copy of. Thank you (28 years ago, 5-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Re: Polaroid Sonar, etc

Hi Jeff, (...) There are no schematics, per se, but there are directions in the cher/.../kent directory. The following excerpt is from the readme file there. It contains the information you need to attach the ranging module to the Handy Board. Hope (...) (28 years ago, 5-Aug-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
