Plastruct makes a glue (actually a solvent) that works well with ABS
(along with most other Styrenes).  I believe the solvent is based on
Methyl Ethyl Keytone.  Fumes are pretty nasty, and I believe the solvent
is classified as a carcinogen in California.  Use in a *well* ventillated
area.

Works very well - brush a little on, then snap pieces together.  The
solvent will flow into the seam due to capilary action, then disolves the
plastic slightly.

Cyanoacryilic glues (Crazy Glue, etc) are OK for bonding ABS to other
materials (slippery engineering plastic used on axles, metal, etc).  For
ABS to ABS, however, I prefer working with a solvent.

What's the chemical composition of Lego parts?
(Already thinking about self-made sensors, I want to prepare the proper
glue...).

ABS, a polymer of polystyrene: Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene. Very easy to
cut, saw, drill and glue :-)

I agree with cut saw and drill, but glue? So far, everything I have tried
remains "fragile". I remember, a long time ago, before people used glue for
"recreational" purposes, there were glues for models which actually disolved
the plastic slightly creating more of a weld than a gluing I can't seem to
find it anymore. And I have not had a lot of luck with epoxies either. Lego
bricks seem to resist gluing.

Anyone got any glue brands that they know work well?

JB

I got a pint of Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) at Home Depot about 2 years ago... I will try mixing some with extra plastic to increase the viscosity. I have a darkroom exhaust fan and that's my place for such work. How about the typical plastic plumbing (...) (25 years ago, 1-Jan-00, to lugnet.robotics)
