Maybe we can communicate with RCX via Morse code? :-)

There are also five buttons to let you start any of the five stored programs.
With the non-lego firmware, maybe we can use these five buttons for additional
messages.

Right now, for me the remote control is more of a handy testing tool than a
controlling tool.

Please fill us in on these two characteristics:  directionality of
both the RCX and the remote ...also, what range for reliable control?

On the remote control there is a Beeper button. Pressing it makes the RCX
beep, and you can use it to check if the RCX is in range.

Since I have been using the remote mostly as a testing tool and have not put
it in rigorous use, I don't have the real data but just some good impressions.

In my room, the remote seems to work better than the IR tower, but this may be
because the battery in the IR tower is wearing out. Within two or three meters
the directions of both the RCX and the remote do not matter much. At five
meters I have to point the remote at the RCX.
