MIT has an autonomous robot competition (it is in fact being held later on
this month).
The goal of the competition varries from year to year, but it's usually
"easter egg"ish.
The competition is only open to students... It's really a winter-session
class at MIT, the students have less than a month to build their robots out
of (primarily) Lego. They don't use the standard Mindstorms kit, nor the
standard sensors and motors, but most of what is now in Mistorms was modeled
after what they have anywhay.
The final rounds of the competition are open to the public to watch on Jan
28th I think...(for anyone in the Boston area), though it's hard to find a
seat if you're not early.
I'm sure we could steal the competition idea(s) past and present if we
wanted to. Some of them are really interesting. A couple of years back they
had an ball-hunt where many of the balls were suspended in mid-air with
forced air streams. Other balls were up on raised platforms, etc.

| In my misspent youth I saw a competition on PBS which was a robot competition at (I think) MIT. The point of this particular contest was not unlike Hungry Hungry Hippos, but with ping-pong balls. The court was about 3' by 6', and it sloped toward (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

| (...) Hrm... you know, this would probably come down to whose robot actually moves the fastest. A live mouse, at least, can navagate the maze by smell (not to say that it always does, mind you), and since smell travels around corners, the mouse can (...)
