  Re: Alternative Mindstorm Robotwars

(...) Hrm... you know, this would probably come down to whose robot actually moves the fastest. A live mouse, at least, can navagate the maze by smell (not to say that it always does, mind you), and since smell travels around corners, the mouse can (...)   Re: Alternative Mindstorm Robotwars

(...) I disagree. Pure speed has the problem that it can end up repeating trips down dead-ends. A slower, but mapping, bot would have no repeats, and could win. (...) If you stipulate in the rules that the bot must touch each step, or some such, it (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Alternative Mindstorm Robotwars

MIT has an autonomous robot competition (it is in fact being held later on this month). The goal of the competition varries from year to year, but it's usually "easter egg"ish. The competition is only open to students... It's really a (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Alternative Mindstorm Robotwars

In my misspent youth I saw a competition on PBS which was a robot competition at (I think) MIT. The point of this particular contest was not unlike Hungry Hungry Hippos, but with ping-pong balls. The court was about 3' by 6', and it sloped toward (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Alternative Mindstorm Robotwars

(...) Why map? Just build a bot that keeps a feeler on the left wall, and turns left if it loses the wall. You'd never go down the same hallway twice, and there's much less programming. (...) And/or that it may have no wheels! Daniel "Dan'l" Miller (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Alternative Mindstorm Robotwars

Simple right hand rule or left hand rule solutions always will solve the maze _unless_ you start in the middle of the maze, or the exit is in the middle. But a smarter solution might be able to exploit knowledge about the maze to solve it, so even (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  RE: Alternative Mindstorm Robotwars

(...) Depending on the topology of the maze, your bot may never find the exit with this strategy. Here's the simplest example: +---...---+ | F | | | | +-+ | | | |S | | +-+ | +---...---+ S = Start F = Finish -- Did you check the web site first?: (URL) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Alternative Mindstorm Robotwars

(...) I'd be less concerned about the mice crawling all over the lego than I would be about the safety of the mouse. LEGO constructs can be easily be cleaned, repaired, or even replaced at a nominal cost If a careless 'bot happened to go right over (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Alternative Mindstorm Robotwars

(...) Let me start by saying that I agree with you 100%. Mouse torture does not make for an interesting game. :) On the other hand, I think we are strongly underestimating the mouse. Anyone who has every tried to catch one when it gets loose will (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Alternative Mindstorm Robotwars

(...) I was more noting that it's hard to herd critters that can crawl over you to escape. W/R/T the safety of the mice...well, local pet shops do sell mice for snake food, so while I do deplore needless harm to animals, I don't see the possibility (...) Daniel Miller wrote in message ... (...) That was probably the MechE competition 2.670 or, now, 2.007... we got a bunch of random parts, and then had to machine them into a robot which is remote-controlled. The EECS students get a bunch of Lego and (...) (26 years ago, 14-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Alternative Mindstorm Robotwars

(...) Yes, yes, all right already. I must admit that I am an aerospace engineer and not an artificial intelligence guru. When people say "maze" I get a mental image that has an entrance on one end and an exit on the other. The maze competition would (...) (26 years ago, 15-Jan-99, to lugnet.robotics)
