I recall someone put a pair of light sensors out on the end of very long arms
out in front and back of the robot. This meant that they moved a much larger
distance than if they were mounted close to the wheels so that their relative
lack of sensitivity can be compensated for.
IIRC, this worked but looked very ungainly.
