I did a device like this, where the motor ran a differential, which was then
used to wind up and release the axle that did the work. One
differential output shaft did the winding, and the wound-up axle was held for
firing by a gear and ratchet on the end opposite the winding end. This
allowed the device to remain cocked indefinitely and without depending on
the motor to hold it. When the motor was reversed, the other
end of the differential turned an arm that tripped the ratchet, releasing
the wound-up axle.
