Even if it wasn't the case, robots don't drive straight because of
small differences in how you build one side of the robot compared
to the other (eg the collars might be squeezed more tightly onto a
beam on one motor than on the other)...also you should consider
small differences in friction, unevenness in the floor...all
sorts of other effects.
Bottom line is that you simply cannot expect your robot to go
straight without some serious control logic.

Yes - I'm a programmer too - and the physical stuff is definitely the
hard part!

Not statically. You have to continuously monitor the number of revs
the drive shaft have gone through and 'float' the motor that's getting
ahead so that the other motor can catch up.
Rotation sensors are a very useful addition to your Lego collection.
