Oops! Forgot the second half of your question.
There are three RCX varients:
RIS 2.0 -- Has a USB-port interface to the IR tower that
lets you download programs to the RCX computer.
RIS 1.5 -- Same deal - but the IR tower is interfaced via
the PC's RS232 serial port.
RIS 1.0 -- Same as RIS 1.5 except that there was an external
power connector on the RCX computer so you could
save your battery life.
There are very minor differences in the other Lego parts that come
with each set...nothing important.
The firmware that comes with RIS 1.0 and 1.5 is not as good as you
get with RIS 2.0 - but you can download the new firmware from the
Lego website - so that's no big deal.
SUMMARY: If you need a USB tower, get the 2.0 set. If you don't
care then prefer 1.0 to 1.5 because of the power connector.

| Hi, I'm new to the list, and to lego robotics for that matter. I am looking to buy one of the kits but would like to be able to use all the linux programming tools available. What are the differences between the 1.5, and 2.0 kits? (22 years ago, 22-Nov-02, to lugnet.robotics)
