About the towers, am I right in hearing that the serial IR tower _does_

It needs one of those 9 volt batteries.  It seems to last *forever* - but
then I only use it for relatively short and infrequent program downloads.
It might last for dramatically shorter times if you spend a lot of time
talking back and forth to your Robots as they are working.

And the RCX 1.0, while it has an AC adapter it does also work with
batteries?

Yes - it's just the same as the RCX 1.5 and 2.0 in that respect.

I should say that it DOESN'T COME WITH AN AC ADAPTOR - only the socket
in the case to allow you to connect one up if you buy one separately.

Now all I have to do is find a cheap RIS 1.0... and then a RIS 2.0 upgrade.
Or will I need a RIS 1.5 upgrade as well?  And where can I get the newest
firmware?

I think that's still on the Lego site somewhere.  If you can't find it,
in the ever-changing sea of links on their site, email me privately and I'll
shoot you off a copy (since it's free, there shouldn't be any problem with
doing that).

Thank you! You've all been very helpful. About the towers, am I right in hearing that the serial IR tower _does_ require batteries? If so, how many does it need and about how long do they last? And the RCX 1.0, while it has an AC adapter it does (...) (23 years ago, 30-Oct-01, to lugnet.robotics)
