OK, I meant "general purpose motors". If you consider everything that is
available today and turns if you apply electrical power to it, you get:
- 5114 non geared 9V Motor
- 5300 Train Motor 9V
-  624 9V Motor. Actually, a motor block with two axles for
building Lego cars. Uses 9V battery box.
- 2932 Duplo train engine
- 5221 Technic Motor. A motor block with
       battery compartment and switch.
- 8735 9V Technic geared motor (as found in
Mindstorms sets)
- 9748 Microscout
- 5600 Car base with remote control
- ???? Cybermaster (has one motor built into unit)
- ???? 9V Micromotor (available through Dacta product line)

Many of these are available in many different sets. I only listed one set
each for reference. Watches and clocks excluded :-)

And if you include out-of-production sets, you'll get a much longer list.
There's the monorail, 12V trains, 4.5V trains, and so on.

There are only 3 9V motors in the Lego product line today:
- the geared motor as found in the Mindstorms sets. This is the • one that has
a cube like shape, with lots of irregularities.
- the ungeared motor. This is sort of the classic 9V Technic • motor. It has a
rectangular case, like a small battery box, without any • irregularities. Only
recommended for applications where you need more speed than the • geared motor
can provide.
- the micromotor. It's bright red, and not much bigger than a 2x2 brick.
It's suitable for steerings, moving small arms, etc., or • wherever you don't
have a lot of space for a motor, and don't need a lot of power. It turns
really, really slow.

Just as an addendum, there's also the 9V train motor, although that isn't
easily transferrable since the contact points are on moving parts, etc...

(...) Two, one on each side. I've not looked inside, but they seem comparable to the gear motor in the RIS. Jürgen (24 years ago, 13-Apr-01, to lugnet.robotics)
