Need for chat server? —Ross Carlson
Hi all, I was just curious if there is any interest in having an IRC chat server for this mailing list. I manage a chat server for a major gaming company, so I have the experience in installing, maintaining, and securing a chat server. I can provide (...)         Re: Need for chat server? —Mike Fusion
I think that if you were to create a chat server strictly for lugnet that not only would they appreciate it but people would use it. not at first because it would take a while for some to hear about it but eventually it would get used. i personally (...)          The need for chat server - a dissenting opinion —Matthias Jetleb
Sorry, but I for one have to vote against the idea. I appreciate that, given IRC's relative immediacy, there are some advantages to being able to get an answer "right now". This assumes, of course, that there is someone on-line with the answer (...) (23 years ago, 12-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Hi ( 01.01.12 03:32 +0000 ) Matthias Jetleb: (...) No need to be sorry for a well thought out opinion. (...) I have a feeling most of what would go on would be "chatter" [which is OK]. You are right, that any useful content that appears in a chat (...) (23 years ago, 12-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Hi Matthias, This is an excellent point you make. I agree that the nature of IRC doesn't lend itself to directly contributing to the knowledge base of Lugnet. However I also feel that many problem-brainstormin...g-solution cycles, and the knowledge (...) (23 years ago, 12-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Need for chat server? —Marco C.
I'd use it. I'm always in some irc-net whenever I'm online, so, this would be just another hangging place for me :) This brings up another question: Are there any Lego Robotics IRC channels already on existing IRCnets ? Which ones ? Marco C. aka (...) (23 years ago, 11-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Is MSN an IRC server ? I don't like proprietary webChat systems (Why do people like to reinvent the wheel ?). If it's IRC compliant, I'll use it. (...) Marco C. aka McViper ___...___ Work mailto:mcviper@geocities.com Home mailto:mcviper@clix.pt (23 years ago, 11-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Need for chat server? —Ross Carlson
Ya, that's precisely why I'm offering to maintain an IRC server. I think it would be great to be able to hop onto a chat server and brainstorm a new robotics idea, or get some help with troubleshooting something in real time. I'll wait until I see a (...)         Re: Need for chat server? —Jeroen Stap
(...) I would love to see a IRC chat server for lego-robotics! I believe the combination of mailinglist and IRC is perfect! IRC could bring people closer together on talking about this hobby, and offering fast and realtime answers and discussions. (...) (23 years ago, 13-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)
