(...) Oops! Forgot the second half of your question. There are three RCX varients: RIS 2.0 -- Has a USB-port interface to the IR tower that lets you download programs to the RCX computer. (...) The parts selection isn't that good in the expansion packs. The Extreme Creatures pack has the fiber-optic set which might be useful to some tech-heads. I just got back from the First LEGO League competition in Cincinnati Ohio. I got a sweet volunteer job there. I got to be the helper for one half of the practice table. Now that's a well cool idea! We could set up 'formulas' based on the parts usable by the cars and the programming allowed, something like Formula 3 - standard RIS kit only, regular/NQC RCX code Formula 2 - standard RIS kit only, any (BrickOS, QC, (...) I have given this a fair amount of thought that is not reflected in the sample track. For example, the track should have shoulders on both sides of the gray scale that are opposite to the color on the respective sides of the gray scale. In other (...) (23 years ago, 22-Nov-02, to lugnet.robotics)

I've considered that concept, but I wanted to avoid a variation of line following. In real racing, drivers go full throttle until a specific braking point. the faster riders generally brake later without screwing up the corner By defining the (...) (23 years ago, 22-Nov-02, to lugnet.robotics)

Here's an interesting idea from Gus Jansson for that type of track: (URL) allows you to maintain a smooth line around the course, but not all 'cars' have to follow the same line. The sets are fairly similar in terms of pieces and hardware. The major difference is the RIS 2.0 software, which, if you are planning to use the Linux tools, doesn't really matter to you. One idea that I always wanted to persue was autonomus car racing, nascar style. I thought of setting up a small oval on a 4x8 sheet of plywood and marking the entrance to the corners in one shade, inside boundries(3' from the wall) in a second shade (...)
