I have found that reed switches are very sensitive to the orientation of the
magnet and switch. If you lay the reed switch lengthwise along the track,
it is sensitive to the couplers between trains, especially between cars
where there are two magnets linked together. However, if you simply turn
the reed switch, and lay it _across_ the tracks, it will not be closed by
the coupler magnets, since they are oriented along the wrong axis. You can
then affix a magnet (or two) sideways across the bottom of a train to
actually trip the reed switch.
