John Gerlach built a rolling lift bridge that uses (40 tooth) gears as the
axles, no less. It had a huge moment as it was several track sections long. He
did it that way because of axle shearing...
I would worry more about the axles breaking than the gears. Gears can take a lot
of weight as long as you are not putting rotational torque or shear on the
axles... TJ Avery did some studies on this a while back too, IIRC.
