Re: rtlToronto14 AC issue and entrants

(...) To my mind, it's a perfectly good reason for saying no. Let's turn the tables and suppose allowing AC was the norm. I come along and requested that AC *not* be allowed because I can only use batteries. The response would likely have been along (...) (21 years ago, 26-Aug-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

Re: rtlToronto14 AC issue and entrants

(...) Well. I guess that is a better explanation than you posted before. Thanks for posting it. It may not be a good technical answer but at least it has democratic rationale. Ben (21 years ago, 26-Aug-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

Re: rtlToronto14 AC issue and entrants

(...) I'm not entering so I have no official say. We allowed ext. power for project x 'cause, well, the 'bots didn't move. IIRC, I noticed in the vid for monkey bars that one was using ext. power. but then there should have been no chance that bots (...) (21 years ago, 26-Aug-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

Re: rtlToronto14 AC issue and entrants

(...) No, because AC power also means you can be sloppy with control loops. You can brute force time instead of using clever mechanisms (Iain/Rob) or sensoring everything (Chris, Bruce) (...) This is why I was against the external battery box of (...) (21 years ago, 26-Aug-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

Re: rtlToronto14 AC issue and entrants

(...) Because if you're using AC you're at an advantage because you *CAN* time everything. If you're using battery power you can't do that. You get that huge inherent advantage of being able to build a simpler robot that runs far more reliably (...) (21 years ago, 26-Aug-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

Re: rtlToronto14 AC issue and entrants

I forgot to mention... We do this for FUN. We do this to see different approaches to the same problem. The contest simply gives us a common goal and a time deadline. Winning, and for that matter losing, are really not what we're about. (21 years ago, 26-Aug-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
