As long as it has a voltage that is at least 1.7 volts above its output
voltage (and below some upper voltage), it will give its output voltage.

You can get voltage regulators for many voltages, like 3v (7803), 6v
(7806), 12v (7812), etc. See

(...) i disagree!! sorry, this is a bit of a sore point. the smallest 78xx series i ever found was a 05. I really wanted a 7803 to try to play with some small pneumatic solenoids but none existed. electronsonic has 2 3vdc regulators NONE in stock. (...) (23 years ago, 1-Feb-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
