Very insidious if you ask me!

You will be assimilated... actually, while I've always liked hybrid
construction, with the NXT I tend toward studless, at least partially because I
have my studless sorted seperate from my studded, and... well, I really like the
look of stuf like LNE when I do it clean and studless. I'm pretty sure I could
do better in hybrid, actually, I just haven't wanted to move back that way yet.

[studless] offers a lot of flexibility.

In fact I've thought about the fact that terms like SNOT just don't make much
sense in a mostly studless system, because you are even less constrained by
ideas of up/down. I like having the NXT brick face-up to see the display (which
I really like using), but I've actually built robots with the NXT even
face-down.

So far the NXT robots I've seen have not strayed far from just
sticking stuff on the default robot that comes with the kit.

Well, LNE certainly isn't, and there's a lot of other builders with some
interesting designs like this:

Artic Snow Cat:

There's a lot of other intersting ones out there, some that pop up on NXTlog
(although there's still a lot of "barely modified Tribots" there as well). Some
nice holonomic platforms like Steves Omni and some more standard "drive the
wheels through the turntable" types too.

(...) I have to agree with you, it does grow on you. I'm not opposed to the studless system. It offers a lot of flexibility. Like you I'm getting used to it. However I do think it's a tricky concept for kids at the FLL age. I think there is a (...) (18 years ago, 2-Mar-07, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
