The Metroloiner is a decent set and it would be wise to pick one up before it
disappears again. The set does require a regulator which is not included. They
can be gotten cheap on ebay or bricklink. Lego sells them for $40 but they can
be had for as little as $10. Many Trainheads (myself included) buy multiple
copies of some sets and it doesn't take long to have more regulators than you
will ever need. A set without a regultor keeps the cost down. Its a trade off
I guess. A decent set to start with (IMHO)is the 4512 - Cargo Train. Its a
good mix of parts, it comes with a regulator and even includes a switch.

You might want to take a look at some of the set inventories on peeron or
bricklink. The different sets have differnt parts not available elsewhere or
rare parts that are harder to get. The cargo train has the new buffers and
large train doors in gray, the metroliner has Pantographs ect, ect.
Hope that helps.
