Kids today.  They act like they never saw Colossal Cave, Zork, Scott Adams...

I may have missed the boat on Scott Adams, but the only text-ish adventures of
his that I ever played were those Marvel Comics "Questprobe" games, which I
found, let us say, disappointing.  Were there other good ones that I didn't get
to play?

Dave!

Scott Adams created (or licensed) a set of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
text-based adventure games that were not quite as humorous as the books and not
quite as good as Zork or Colossal Cave.  Mainly because these games had a strict
timeline and you really had to follow the script of the books pretty closely.
(ie: Very limited number of moves to get off of Earth before it gets destroyed,
etc.)  These games never held the appeal for me that the less linear adventure
games did.  I believe that these games were published by Infocom.

By contrast, CC adventure has a series of puzzles that you can solve in many
different orders, although you do have limited time before your flashlight
batteries die and some puzzles must be solved before you can access other parts
of the cave.  But you can wander around the cave and explore and try things out
without having to do a lot of save/die/restore cycles.  It's really only when
you have figured it all out and are trying to achieve the rank of Grand Master
that it is necessary to plan your activities and follow a script.

- Chris.
