It's Dutch, and not all that common. It wasn't until I was into my 20's until I
met other folks with my last name that I wasn't related to.
Here's a pickup line--
A woman I just introduced to--I was 22ish and she was around 20ish--
"Hey Dave, this is my frind Jen Koudys..."
"Hi Jen," says I, "Hey, if we get married, you wouldn't have to change your last
name!"
Probably not the best thing to say, but we all had a great laugh.
Those crazy Dutch folk put 2 dots on top of the y for some strange reason, so
sometimes you'll see it spelled in phone books as "Koudijs" which makes even
less sense for the pronunciation.
The translation, for those interested, is, well, ummmm,...
Cold Ice.
A little redundant, but, eh, whatreya gonna do.
