I quizzed a WalMart manager concerning the procedures for discounting
products. WalMart management, specifically the toy dept. manager, has
complete discretion as to when and amounts of the discounts that will be
applied to the toys. Usually the markdowns will be done over weeks but in
several cases the markdowns are done in only a few days. Here is the catch,
if a manager is tired of continually discounting the merchandise, the
manager can discount the price to zero, and then trash the item. Once the
amount of time and energy spent discounting the items exceeds the profit or
price of the item, it is the managers decision to discount to zero dollars
and destroy/trash the items. And yes, this happens to Lego. Some managers
who do not want to mess with discounting may run all their discounts on one
day and then trash the items. I know this sounds unbelievable, but if the
manager has enough funds in the dept. budget to discount the items, the
situation above can and usually does happen.
And don't even think of dumpster diving, they prosecute for theft property,
even their trash. No, I have not tried it. Although if dumpster of Lego is
out there, I will be sorely tempted.

| (...) I heard about this once a few years back. The person who described it to me said something to the effect... "we make it not resaleable, then dump some red paint on the pile of stuff in the dunpster". I was always a bit skeptical, but in (...) (23 years ago, 11-Jan-02, to lugnet.market.shopping)

| (...) Oh . . . the humanity! That is very disturbing information. I have never heard of this before. I wonder if other chains do this. It just reaffirms that I should hit up more Walmarts to save the Lego sets from this dire fate as I did today. I (...) (23 years ago, 11-Jan-02, to lugnet.market.shopping)
