Anyway, the other issue I wanted to mention is WalMart's new policy of
asking for your zip code when you make a purchase. I don't know how
anybody else feels, but as for me, I think it's none of their business
where I live (or what my phone number is - a practice which some stores
have started).

TRU does that around here, and Radio Shack has long had a similar phone
number policy.  One of the ZIP codes for Juneau, Alaska, is 99801.  Just use
that!  8^)

When asked for my zip code, I give them my postal code from the UK--the machines
aren't set up to take foreign postal codes.  "SW7 9EB."  "What?"

I like the "are you giving me a discount?" tack better, though.  At least it
explains the why.

When asked for a zip code, I usually give them a zip code that is obviously a lie -
such as 90210 (as in Beverly Hills 90210).  That generally pisses off the cashier,
but I have never been accused of lying when I've used it (in Iowa and Pittsburgh).

(...) I worked for Tandy for nearly five years. They asked address information, and in fact if your percentage was below 90% of customers giving information, they were liable to discipline or terminate you. My percentage was nearly 98%--it's weird (...) (25 years ago, 24-Jan-00, to lugnet.market.shopping)
