Just a comment from the BUGS experience, seeing as we really have our act
together these days on joint S@H orders.
Getting people to submit orders in advance for distribution at the meeting just
doesn't seem to work. Not many people get their acts together to respond by the
deadline, and this reduces the number people to share the shipping cost
(although with the new Regular Shipping, this isn't as big an issue as it used
to be).
Ordering together on-line at the meeting however is usually very successful.
Lots of people participate and the orders placed are usually pretty large. And
distribution afterwards just provides an excuse for a lot of
mini-get-togethers.
I think the ordering together has the advantage that everyone knows how many
people are involved and hence knows exactly what the shipping cost each will
be, whereas ordering in advance, people are taking the risk that enough order
people will order. Also, when ordering together, people often get other
people's opinions on sets and this helps them to decide whether or not to order
a particular item. Also you often get the situation when someone says "I think
I'd like a XXXX but I'm just not sure, but since you are ordering one anyway,
maybe I will wait to the next meeting and take a look at yours first" etc. So
the discussion with others tends to make people more confident in the orders
they are placing.
The downside (or upside depending on your finances!) of ordering together is
that you tend to see other people buying things you had not even thought about,
and so people tend to say "yeah, bung one in for me too" a lot.
Whatever, the joint orders at the meeting are always a convivial affair, and
seem to be a regular feature of all our BUGS meetings these days. As we hold
BUGS meetings in private homes, having Internet access isn't a problem.
However, in a hall, even with a laptop, there is still the issue of having a
phone line available for the modem -- a S@H order using a mobile phone attached
to the modem could generate a substantial phone bill!
