RE: An Australian Brickfest type event for the year 2005.

Hi all, To help things move along, I thought it might be a good idea and some fun for all interested, to answer the below... (copy and paste the following questions)

Where are you from?

Well, one day, my Dad loved my Mum very much...

What is your occupation and who do you work for?

50% Management 30% Legal 30% Accounting.

What should Australia’s first larger private/public event/show/convention/fest etc be called? (Please, only three choices).

Brickfest (Oz/Downunder)

Where should the event be held? • Melbourne • Sydney • Adelaide • Perth • Brisbane • Other?

Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne (though not necessarily in that order)

When should it take place? • During School Holidays? • After School Holidays? • June long weekend? • Early 2005? • Late 2005? • 2006? • Other
2006 is too far away to plan for. June long weekend is traditional and is outside peak holiday season.

How many days should the event take place over? Answering that, how many days would you attend the event?

1 and two half days of formal activities, plus two half days of set up and knock down (or thereabouts).

Should there be an entry fee/ticket and how much should the fee/ticket cost? How much would you be willing to pay?

You often get what you pay for (though there are plenty of exceptions). I wouldn’t be averse to paying $100ish for something good.
How many people do you think would attend such an event? • Less than 30 • 30 • 50 or more • 100 • Hundreds • Other

30ish. maybe a few more.

Would you prefer it if the LEGO group/company were involved or would you prefer for them not to be?

Without Lego support, alot of things would be harder.

Would you like to help organise it? If so how would you like to participate?

I’d help. But not anything involving handling cash (or equivalent). And nothing involving crowd control.

Would you want it to attract others from other nations?

I don’t think it should be geared to ‘attract’ internationals, but if they’re attracted, then fine.

How could/would the event be better than what other events around the world have to offer?

A sense of humour - we could have jokes which involve more than saying “.SPACE” loudly.

Who would you like to attend? • AFOLs only • Public • Both

Given the right venue, AFOLs (and accompanied KFOLs) only for most of the time. A half or full day public expo thing would be good (but would require an appropriate venue). By accompanied, I pretty much mean attached by a leash to the accompanier. (Insert ‘guilt’ emoticon here).
What would you like to see at the event?

MOCs (especially big MOCs) , including a big train layout, possibly a modular moonbase and/or castle. Brikwars & Pirate Game. Brick bazaar. Technics/mindstorms stuff (cranes! robots!).

   How should it be organised?

By a properly constituted entity, with competent officers with adequate funding and appropriate insurance. (And doing that will probably be the hardest part of the organisation.)

What sort of Audience should the event attract? • AFOLs only • School Children and Children • Everyone
See above.

If the event turned out to be a success, would you attend another? If yes, when? • The year after • Two years time • Never

Yes.

If you would attend the next one should it be held in the same place again or another destination in another state?

No opinion.

Would you donate any of your ‘unwanted’ LEGO to the East Timor Children? (If there were a deposit box at the event etc).

No.

Do you think it would be a cool idea if LEGO organised a RLD (Red Letter Day - refer to UK posts) type event, for those who were interested?

No idea.

Do you think it would be cool if LEGO gave us a chance (if ever possible) to buy bulk bricks from the event?

Yes, definitely cool. At the right price, I’d even buy some (or lots).

Would you like to buy stuff not normally available to us at the event?

If it was at the right price.

Would you like to see a ‘World Record’ type activity held at the event?

Yes, but not to the exclusion of most participants.

Would you like to see a Commemorative Brick, especially made for us, at the event? (Like the Promotional Duplo bricks).

Yes. The brickfest type name tag bricks would do me.

What do you think would be the overall ideal event to be held for Australia’s first large event like this? (besides whatever LEGO already do and the National meets).

I think bringing whatever Lego already does and a National meet together would be good. Bricksmeet 03 made it to within a couple of hundred metres of a big build...

What was the last event/show/convention/fest etc did you last attend that meant the most to you? What was the highlight of it?

Spending time on nothing but lego (and the odd megablok)

Anything I have missed that you would like to add?
Don’t underestimate the time, money and risk involved.
Don’t overestimate how much help you will get.

Cheers

Richie Dulin

(...) Let me add (having cavalier disregard for the 'three choices' request): Of course, if Lego sponsorship were involved, they would probably want 'Lego' in the name... and I think having 'Lego' in the name would be far better than 'brick' in (...)
