In addition to the warped trunk, the plastic seems to be softer
than other trees in my collection (as Huw has also pointed out), and the
base does not lock to other bricks with any strength at all.

I am sorry to hear my trees were not the only bent ones...

I have never seen an original cypress tree to know if the plastic
formulation has changed or not, but presumably someone here has some old
ones they can compare these new ones with.

Hate to burst your collective bubble guys, but these trees are exactly like the
old ones AFAICT.  I have one from my son's town alongside a package of five new
ones, and there is NO difference (other than the slight dustiness and faintly
"chewed" edge of the base of the one I lent my son). The numbers on the bottom
of my new ones are 001 and 002.  My old specimen is numbered 001 in exactly the
same spot.  The older ones tend to have slight bends too, but I had just
assumed it was from being stored under piles of LEGO through hot Vacaville
summers.

The way you all are carrying on about it reminds me of the old Mick Jagger
story.  Not appropriate for this forum, but suffice it to say if you dream of
something for so long, you're in danger of imagining it to be better than the
real thing was to begin with.
